Job Summary

The Code Enforcement Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance with local ordinances, codes, and regulations designed to maintain public safety, health, and aesthetics within the community. This includes conducting inspections, investigating complaints, issuing citations, and working with residents, property owners, and businesses to enforce compliance with zoning, building, housing, health, and environmental codes. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, an understanding of local regulations, and a commitment to fostering community standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine inspections of properties, businesses, and public spaces to ensure compliance with local codes and ordinances, including but not limited to zoning, building, environmental, and health codes.
  • Respond to and investigate complaints related to violations of codes, such as overgrown vegetation, junk vehicles, illegal signage, property maintenance issues, and other nuisances.
  • Issue warnings, citations, and orders to comply for violations of applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records of inspections, violations, citations, and follow-up activities.
  • Provide education and guidance to property owners, residents, and businesses regarding code compliance requirements and procedures.
  • Work with property owners and businesses to resolve violations in a fair, timely, and professional manner.
  • Attend hearings and court proceedings to provide testimony related to code violations when necessary.
  • Collaborate with other city departments, law enforcement, and external agencies to address code enforcement issues and community concerns.
  • Stay informed on changes in local, state, and federal codes and regulations affecting enforcement responsibilities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to conduct outdoor inspections in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds as needed.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for special events or community meetings.

Work Environment:

  • Work is typically performed in both office and field settings, with exposure to various weather conditions, potential hazards, and situations that may require conflict resolution.
  • The Code Enforcement Officer may be required to interact with individuals who are uncooperative or hostile.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • $30-$50 per hour based on experience and qualification

Qualification:

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, criminal justice, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in code enforcement, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of local zoning ordinances, building codes, health and safety regulations, and environmental codes.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce laws and regulations effectively and fairly.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well with the public, residents, business owners, and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to make sound judgments based on established guidelines and regulations.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively.
  • Basic computer skills and experience using office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite) and databases.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Certification in Code Enforcement (e.g., through the Texas Code Enforcement Association) may be required or preferred.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $30.00 - $50.00 per hour

Education:

  • High school or equivalent (Required)

Experience:

  • Plumbing Inspection: 6 years (Required)

License/Certification:

  • TSBPE license (Required)
