Accounting Manager - Foundation

JOB SUMMARY 

The Accounting Manager is responsible for the monthly and annual closing processing as well as daily accounting operations of the AOPA Foundation.  This includes supervising and directing accounting functions primarily in the areas of general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.  The Accounting Manager is responsible for coordination of accounting activities to ensure the integrity of the financial systems and compliance with accounting and regulatory policy.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Perform the monthly close and annual audit activities, budget cycles and financial statement preparation for the AOPA Foundation.
  • Ability to research, interpret and implement proper treatment of new accounting pronouncements and regulations.
  • Perform all aspects of fund and fundraising gift accounting, reviewing monthly financials as part of the closing process, investigating and resolving budget variances, assisting operational managers in the development of their financial budget and support, reviewing and verifying budget support for completeness.
  • Assist managers in financially evaluating existing as well as new projects or initiatives, prepare all financial analysis as needed and educate staff where needed on financial issues. 
  • Develop monthly financial and key metrics reporting for management.
  • Provide all necessary support for the annual audit process including closing entries, reconciliations, schedules and analysis and drafting of audited financials and associated supplemental information as well as interaction with audit personnel.
  • Provide all necessary budget support and accounting for the Foundation.  This includes contract review, coordination of billing, labor allocation, compliance with all relevant regulations (i.e. government contracts), etc.
  • Manage the departmental implementation, usage and support of NetSuite and Salesforce.
  • Recommend and document procedural and/or system changes needed to enhance business processes.  Identify areas for improvement and implement changes to strengthen the financial and accounting control framework.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting or related field is required. 
  • Extensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP and other accounting and reporting standards, with the ability to stay current on important updates and to train others in these standards.
  • Five to seven years of relevant operations management experience in the field of non- profit accounting, specifically in NetSuite.
  • Proficiency with accounting principles and governmental rules and regulations for both for-profit and non-profit organizations.
  • Knowledge of the association and fund-raising industries and industry specific issues and accounting treatments is also required. 
  • Proficiency with NetSuite and Salesforce. 

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPA is preferred
  • Knowledge of the aviation industry and the issues facing private pilots is also helpful. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position works in an office setting.
  • Typical working hours are 8:30 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with an hour lunch break.
  • Generally, a climate-controlled environment with occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions when attending aviation related events, including exposure to higher altitudes and confined spaces if in a general aviation aircraft.
  • This position does not require travel.
  • This position does not supervise others.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands of the position are typical of a standard office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly be required to:

  • Sit for extended periods while working at a computer or attending meetings.
  • Use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
  • Communicate effectively via email, phone, and in-person, which requires clear speech, hearing, and vision.
  • Occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 15 pounds, such as boxes of materials or equipment.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms during the course of normal office activities.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  

This position is located at AOPA’s Frederick, MD headquarters.   Remote optional: Fridays

The salary range for this position is: $95,000 - $105,000, depending on education and experience.
