Duties:
The Principal Systems Engineer will:
- Oversee the engineering, maintenance, and modernization of a major CMS IT system, ensuring reliability, security, and compliance.
- Implement AWS-based system infrastructure to optimize performance and scalability, supporting high availability for mission-critical CMS applications.
- Develop and maintain DevSecOps pipelines, ensuring secure and automated deployments across multiple environments.
- Conduct system performance assessments, implementing optimizations, capacity planning, and cost-reduction strategies.
- Support integration efforts with CMS enterprise services, ensuring seamless data sharing, authentication, and interoperability.
- Lead infrastructure-as-code (IaC) initiatives, ensuring rapid provisioning and configuration management.
- Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to ensure all system components align with CMS Acceptable Risk Safeguards (ARS) and FISMA compliance.
- Provide technical leadership in CMS discussions regarding system reliability, modernization, and cloud best practices.
- Support compliance efforts, ensuring that system architectures meet CMS security and audit requirements.
- Assist in knowledge transfer efforts, training CMS staff and contractors on engineering best practices and emerging technologies.
Education:
- Master s degree in computer science, Systems Engineering, or related field.
Required Skills:
- 10-15 years of experience in systems engineering, cloud infrastructure, and enterprise IT solutions.
- Proficiency in AWS GovCloud, Linux (RHEL), and cloud security frameworks.
- Strong knowledge of networking, system monitoring (Splunk, AWS CloudWatch), and load balancing strategies.
- Hands-on experience managing CI/CD pipelines, security automation, and enterprise IT infrastructure.
- Experience supporting federal IT systems with stringent compliance and security controls.
- Ability to lead engineering teams in resolving complex technical challenges, performance bottlenecks, and infrastructure automation.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Prior experience working on CMS, CCIIO, or federal health IT projects.
- Knowledge of Section 508 accessibility requirements and their impact on system engineering.
- Certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, CISSP, or ITIL.
