What are the responsibilities and job description for the Group Fitness Instructor position at Apex Park and Recreation District?
Under the general supervision of the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator, this role focuses on fostering strong relationships with Apex members and creating engaging aquatic fitness classes to maintain or boost attendance. The position promotes fitness and wellness through safe instruction of aquatic fitness classes and assists with substituting classes when necessary. Additional responsibilities include announcing and informing participants about relevant Apex activities, attending all staff meetings and trainings, and adhering to Apex policies and procedures. Instructors must obtain continuing education credits, maintain current certifications, and provide documentation of all certifications to the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator promptly. They must also respond appropriately to all emergency situations.
Les Mills – Body Pump/Shapes Instructor
Apex Park and Recreation District is excited to launch Les Mills programs in January 2025 and is looking for certified instructors for BodyPump and/or Shapes. We have several available time slots for both programs. If you're a certified instructor, we'd love to hear from you!
BARRE
Experience teaching low-impact, high-intensity workouts that combine elements of ballet, Pilates, and yoga. This could include a background in dance or Pilates to facilitate effective instruction in proper alignment, form, and technique.
Aquatic Fitness
Familiarity with exercises performed in water, including water aerobics, aqua Zumba, or swim-based fitness routines. Knowledge of water resistance principles and how they affect the body is crucial, as well as understanding the safety guidelines unique to aquatic settings.
General Fitness
A well-rounded understanding of fitness principles such as strength training, cardio, flexibility, and mobility, along with the ability to teach classes that may include HIIT, circuit training, or other mixed formats.
In addition to applicable certifications, we are also looking for experience in the following
Safety and Modifications:
- Experience in modifying exercises for clients with different abilities, ages, and fitness levels. An instructor who can provide options for both beginners and more advanced participants, ensuring the classes are accessible and effective for everyone.
- Knowledge of injury prevention and how to teach proper form to reduce the risk of strain, particularly for BARRE (which involves precise movements) and aquatic fitness (where water resistance can create unique challenges).
Enthusiasm & Communication
- A passion for fitness and a strong ability to motivate participants. Fitness instructors need to be able to create a welcoming, positive, and energetic environment, whether in the studio or poolside.
- Strong verbal communication skills to ensure clear instruction, especially when demonstrating complex movements or providing corrections.
Flexibility and Class Variety
- Ability to teach a variety of fitness classes, both in-person and potentially virtually, depending on your facility’s needs. This flexibility allows them to step into different formats or cover shifts as needed.
Additional Considerations
- Experience with specific populations (e.g., seniors, prenatal/postnatal, rehabilitation) could be a plus, especially for aquatic fitness where water-based exercises are often beneficial for joint health and mobility.
- Familiarity with tracking fitness progress or using technology (like fitness apps or wearables) could also be valuable, especially in the context of general fitness classes.
If you are a certified instructor in any of the above, we would love to hear from you!
We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. We encourage qualified individuals from all backgrounds, including women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans, to apply. Our organization values the unique perspectives and experiences that a diverse workforce brings, and we are dedicated to creating an environment where everyone feels valued and respected.
