The Systems Engineer works in an in a multi-technology environment and will be responsible for managing our Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and all associated components including but not limited to Azure Databricks (DBX), On Premise and Cloud-based servers and associated third-party software installations and Cloud-based services interfaces and integrations, databases components, and DevOPS pipelines while ensuring well-managed and secure platforms.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Data Services Platforms Systems Engineer Roles and Responsibilities:
- Manage and maintain Data Services platforms which include On-Premise and Cloud-based Windows and Linux-based servers.
- Responsible to gain knowledge of Azure IaaS, PaaS and SaaS components (Function and Logic Apps, Key Vaults, ADLS, DBX, Elastic Search, ADF, etc.), Azure Monitoring/Alerting concepts, principles and management, and user access and security management in the Azure platform space.
- Perform DevOPS functions deploying applications and continue to look for efficiency, automation and testing opportunities.
- Design, develop and maintaining scalable data pipelines (i.e., classic and YAML-based) and analytics solutions
- Perform standard Run The Engine (RTE) and On-Call support on a rotating basis for Data Services platforms including both On Premise Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), Data Lake and Azure Data Backbone platforms ensuring platform availability (performing server restarts and/or service recycling when necessary).
- Support Markel Month End Financial Close (MEFC) processing to ensure we meet published SLA's.
- Manage incidents in a timely and accurate manner ensuring proper actions, communications and resolutions are attained and documented in our Known Errors Database (KEDB).
- Perform necessary application software upgrades, license management and/or Key/Certificate rotations as required for our EDW, Data Lake, Business Intelligence (BI) and Azure platforms.
- Work with end users for access requests and/or issues to Data Services platforms.
- Maintain accurate and relevant documentation in Confluence for new support processes, platforms and software applications added to the Data Services environment. ?
- Create Automation processes where needed to eliminate manual processes to continue our path to ensure we have well-managed platforms.
- Maintain accurate and relevant documentation in Confluence for EDW operational and maintenance processes.
- Perform tasks to ensure security, performance and maintenance of the EDW are managed to ensure high availability and that our end-user experience when interfacing with the EDW is consistent and performant.
- Ensure appropriate metrics and documented KPI's are collected and published for senior leadership review as well as for early detection of potential EDW availability and/or performance issues.
- Ensure appropriate monitoring, alerting and escalation processes are in place and in conformance to published NFR's for the EDW.
- Respond in a timely manner to service outages, access issues and performance degradation events as part of support of the EDW platform in Azure.
Skills and Experiences:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems and other related field or work experience/certifications.
Required/Recommended:
- 3 years of experience performing Windows and Linux Server administration and Database systems (SQL Server and Oracle) administration including incident, application software, security and access control management for those platforms.
- Experience in Azure Cloud (IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS) and Azure DBX, Azure Command Line Interface (CLI), Azure Synapse, Azure Automation, and Azure Powershell along with any Azure related certifications.
- Experience working, administering, and upgrading servers and software in a hybrid environment (On-Premise and Cloud).
- Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) experience including Business Intelligence (BI) applications (i.e., QlikSense, Qlik Replicate, PowerBI, Informatica).
- Experience operating within an ITIL Framework and certification; ServiceNow experience preferred.
- Solid understanding of platform and application security and compliance concepts including SOX along with cost-consideration experience.
- Performance monitoring and automation experience through maintaining existing and developing new alerting and monitoring solutions.
- Experience in SQL, YAML, Terraform and Powershell scripting experience.
- SQL Development and Tuning experience.
