Apex Underground is seeking an experienced and safety-focused Crew Lead (Operator) to manage a small crew. In this role, you will operate heavy machinery while leading your team to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and industry standards. Your leadership will be essential in maintaining a safe, productive job site and delivering high-quality results for our clients.
Your Regular Responsibilities
Equipment Operation: Safely operate a variety of heavy machinery, including excavators, backhoes, and trenchers, to perform digging, grading, and utility installations according to project specifications.
Team Leadership: Lead a 3-5 person crew, providing clear instructions and ensuring that all team members understand their tasks and responsibilities for each job.
Job Site Supervision: Monitor job site conditions to ensure safety protocols are followed, equipment is used properly, and work is conducted in accordance with project plans and timelines.
Quality Control: Inspect completed work for accuracy and adherence to company and client standards. Identify any issues and work with the crew to make necessary adjustments.
Daily Reporting: Maintain accurate records of work performed, including daily logs, equipment usage, and any job site issues or delays. Report progress and concerns to the Project Manager or Site Supervisor.
Equipment Maintenance: Conduct daily inspections of machinery to ensure proper functioning, perform routine maintenance, and report any necessary repairs to the maintenance team.
Safety Enforcement: Conduct daily safety briefings and toolbox talks with the crew, ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety procedures.
Client Interaction: May act as a point of contact for clients on-site, addressing questions and providing updates about project progress as needed.
Your Team for Collaboration & Support
You will report directly to the Foreman or Superintendent. You’ll work closely with field engineers, project coordinators, and other crew leads to ensure that job sites run smoothly and that projects are completed on time and within scope.

Safety and Compliance: Maintain a zero-incident safety record by enforcing safety guidelines and promoting a culture of safety among the crew.
Crew Productivity: Lead a high-performing team by clearly communicating expectations, knowledge of timecard management, offering on-the-job training, and supporting team morale.
Accurate Reporting: Provide clear and detailed updates to management, ensuring that all job-related documentation is accurate and timely.
Technical Requirements
3 years of experience operating heavy equipment in a construction or excavation environment.
Prior experience in a leadership role or demonstrated ability to supervise and coordinate small teams.
Proficiency with operating machinery, including excavators, loaders, backhoes, and other equipment used for underground utility work.
Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations and safe excavation practices, OSHA 30 and competent person required.
Strong understanding of blueprints and site plans, with the ability to interpret and follow them accurately.
Valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) preferred.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks as needed.
