Lab Technician

Purpose of Position
This position is responsible for the accurate, precise, safe and efficient sampling, sample preparation and analysis of liquids, gases and solids generated from the lithium development facilities. In addition, the position holder should provide accurate, precise and timely reporting of results and follow strict quality control procedures established through the Quality Assurance and Quality Control Supervisor and adhere to California Environmental Protection Agency and United States Environmental Protection Agency's analytical procedures. Perform work with moderate supervision and directions from lead chemist.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions)
Conduct sampling, prepare samples and perform analysis of solids, fluids and gases generated by processes related to the direct lithium extraction facilities. Registration of incoming samples (as needed), maintaining a neat and accurate record system of work performed on a daily basis and as needed for quality control tests or regulatory purposes. Demonstrate proficiency in basic wet chemistry techniques (e.g. titrimetric, ion selective and gravimetric methods), Gas Chromatography (GC), Ion Chromatograph (IC), and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emissions Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). (60%)
Ensure that analytical results are accurate and precise through the effective use of quality measures. Adhere to appropriate quality measures to meet or exceed the standards set by EPA, government regulatory, and company requirements relevant to assigned duties. Apply statistical concepts to control the quality of analytical performance. Understand and construct report results to appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Understand and follow Quality System documents relevant to responsibilities (Quality Manual, SOPs and Methods). (15%)
Demonstrate effective use of word processing, spreadsheet and other applicable computing software. Enter sample data into spreadsheets or LIMS in a timely manner. Perform data entry and establish correct recovery using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). (10%)
Perform routine maintenance and standardization on laboratory equipment. Maintain and assist others in maintaining a clean, safe work environment. Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations relative to assigned analytical work. Identify process difficulties and report these together with proposed solutions to supervisor. (10%)
Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned by lead chemist, including special projects. Manage time in a manner that ensures a degree of productivity. (5%)

Position Requirements
Associate of Science degree in chemistry or other physical science. (Typically three years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess an associate's degree.)
Bachelor's degree in chemistry or other physical science with at least one year related experience highly desirable.
Three years of related experience in sampling and analysis of geothermal liquids, gases and solids, or similar laboratory experience.
Demonstrated ability to effectively use basic wet chemistry techniques, gas chromatography, ion chromatography, optical emission spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescent spectroscopy. Strong computing skills, including the use of spreadsheet, word processor, database and information management software tools.
Must have effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, environmental permits, standard operating procedures, and operating and maintenance procedures. Must be capable of issuing routine reports.
Must be able to perform mathematical calculations used in the lab such as dilution and analysis of data statistics. Ability to calculate figure and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of algebra, geometry and statistics. Capable of drawing and interpreting graphs.
Effective ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
Must be able to evaluate results, note trends and irregularities in the data and draw conclusions regarding industrial system processes. Ability to take corrective action by notification of supervisor or plant personnel of irregularities.
Must have certificates in wastewater treatment or water quality technology if assigned to support potable water system.
A valid California driver's license is required.
