INSTRUCTOR RESPONSIBILITIES: It is the duty of the instructor to effectively perform all job criteria, duties, and responsibilities outlined in this document. Each instructor will abide by and enforce the policies and procedures of the Apollo School District.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Conduct Student Orientation:
- Complete student orientation
- Present program overview
- Facilitate student goal-setting/mentoring
- Complete orientation paperwork with students
- Present program options (e.g., location, time, scheduling)
- Review student contract and class expectations
Prepare for Instruction:
- Review and follow course curriculum
- Determine delivery of lesson content
- Customize individualized learning plan (ILP)
- Determine informal assessment tools
- Practice lesson content (e.g., review student assignments, complete problems)
Implement Instruction:
- Present lesson objective
- Assess students' prior knowledge
- Accommodate student characteristics in instruction (e.g., special needs, learning styles)
- Demonstrate lesson concepts
- Lead by guided practice (e.g., question and answer, small group, interactive activities)
- Direct student assignments (e.g., in class, homework)
- Adjust instruction based on learner response
- Evaluate lesson effectiveness
Manage Student Learning Environment:
- Create environment conducive to learning (e.g., safe, inviting, secure)
- Implement student rules and regulations
- Monitor classroom environment (e.g., noise, lighting, temperature)
- Resolve conflicts among students
- Prepare classroom equipment (e.g., desk, technology)
- Provide supplemental aides (e.g., glasses, overlays, stress balls)
- Promote continued learning opportunities (e.g., distance learning, postsecondary education, and workforce training)
- Assist student with online learning
- Assist students in becoming self-directed learners
- Recognize student accomplishments (e.g., graduation, citizenship)
Assess Student Learning:
- Administer standardized assessments (e.g., pre, progress, post)
- Score and evaluate assessment results
- Correlate assessment scores with curriculum
- Administer informal classroom assessments (e.g., quizzes, chapter test)
- Counsel students about assessment results (e.g., standardized, informal, classroom)
- Review and update student portfolio (mentoring)
Administrative Tasks:
- Assemble student portfolio and administrative folders
- Secure and update student administrative folders
- Maintain daily attendance records
- Complete and review monthly reports (e.g., attendance, goals, progress)
- Report student activity to agencies, as needed (e.g., job and family services, child support, parole officer)
- Maintain regular correspondence with Aspire coordinator
- Contact absent students (e.g., email, phone, missing you)
- Generate student recognition certificates
- Complete employee timesheet
- Provide program feedback (e.g., meetings, workshops, projects)
- Participate in staff meetings
- Review policies and procedures
- Document student behavior (e.g., logs, incident)
- Create program awareness within the community
Professional Development:
- Participate in Professional Development
- (New staff is required to complete ~20hours of Professional Development)
- Complete required training (e.g., New Staff Orientation, New Teacher Orientation, Assessment Fundamentals, TABE Training, Intro to Learning to Achieve)
- Network with colleagues (e.g., best practices)
- Maintain required certification
- May participate in professional organizations (e.g., OAACE, COABE)
- Participate in self-directed learning (e.g., webinars, literature review)
- Maintain professional development records
HSE Instructor will teach HSE/GED classes at Putnam County District Library
Class Hours in Ottawa Library: Tuesday and Thursday 8:30am-12:30pm
