Job Title: Independent Retail Pharmacy Technician
Reports to: Pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager
Job Overview:The role of an independent retail pharmacy technician involves assisting pharmacists in all aspects of patient care. This includes accurately dispensing prescribed medications, managing inventory, providing customer service, and ensuring proper medication storage and labeling. This role requires attention to detail and the ability to interact with patients in a professional and compassionate manner. Customer service is of upmost importance in an independent retail pharmacy setting. We are looking for someone who is dependable and trustworthy to continue to build our team.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Medication Dispensing:
- Receive and review prescriptions from patients or healthcare providers.
- Process medication orders through the pharmacy management system.
- Prepare prescriptions by correctly selecting and labeling medications.
- Assist pharmacist in all responsibilities except those that require a pharmacist’s professional judgement.
2. Customer Service and Patient Interaction:
- Greet and assist patients in person or over the phone regarding their prescriptions and pharmacy services.
3. Medication Management and Inventory Control:
- Maintain accurate inventory levels of medications, ensuring that drugs are properly ordered, stocked, and stored.
- Monitor expiration dates and manage the rotation of stock to minimize waste and ensure safety.
- Maintain general pharmacy cleanliness and well-kept workspace, including garbage disposal, sweeping, and maintaining an organized dispensing area.
4. Insurance and Billing Support:
- Verify patient insurance information and process claims for medications.
- Communicate with insurance companies regarding authorization requirements if necessary.
5. Compliance and Documentation:
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations regarding medication dispensing, storage, and handling.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including medication profiles and allergies.
- Understand and adhere to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) regulations.
6. Patient Safety:
- Alert pharmacists to potential medication errors, drug interactions, and other safety concerns.
- Ensure that controlled substances are properly stored and documented according to regulations.
Qualifications:Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Certification as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) or equivalent is preferred.
- Previous experience in a retail or outpatient pharmacy setting is advantageous.
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency with pharmacy software and systems.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills with a positive attitude.
- Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry medication containers weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Range of movement to reach higher than shoulder height.
Work Environment:
- Setting: Outpatient independent retail pharmacy.
- Pay Scale: $10-$17 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
- Benefits: PTO available for full-time employees, competitive pay, ideal hours. The pharmacy is closed on the 6 major holidays and all weekends.
Physical Demands: May involve standing for long periods, lifting, and handling medications.
