Position: Trip Support Coordinator, Center for Outdoor Learning and Leadership 

Location: Boston, MA

Salary: $20-$25 USD/Hour 

 

The Appalachian Mountain Club’s (AMC) Center for Outdoor Learning and Leadership (COLL) is seeking a seasonal Trip Support Coordinator based out of the Boston area to support our gear operations and logistics of outdoor programming. The position is based out of our Boston (Charlestown) office, with travel to gear and training sites, and the potential for remote work 1 day/weekIt is offered at 35 hours/week from April through November 2022. 

 

Program Summary: Educators Outdoors, an initiative of COLL, is an outdoor education, professional development, and social justice program of the Appalachian Mountain Club. We partner with organizations and schools that serve youth from under- resourced communities and communities of color that have historically faced barriers to outdoor recreation. Through Outdoor Leadership Training, trip planning support, and access to gear lending libraries, we collaborate with educators and youth development professionals so they may foster impactful and relevant outdoor experiences for their youth. We envision a future where more youth enjoy the outdoors and where outdoor participation is reflective of every community, with equitable access for all. 

 

General Responsibilities: A key part of a dynamic team, the Trip Support Coordinator will work both independently on projects and collaboratively with staff and volunteers to: 

  • Coordinate the issuing and de-issuing of outdoor equipment from our “Gear Libraries” to members to support their outdoor trips with youth. 

  • Organize, pack, clean, and maintain gear for optimal use: sleeping bags, tents, backpacks, pots and pans, stoves, boots, socks, etc. 

  • Support the logistics for outdoor leadership trainings through meal planning and preparation, packing and transporting equipment, and distribution of gear to participants. 

  • Provide program support the first and/or last day of outdoor leadership trainings through on-site coordination of logistics and equipment. 

  • Maintain inventory and track usage of gear, repairs, and overall maintenance at our Boston-based office and at our remote sites in Canton, North Andover, and Worcester. 

  • Recruit, onboard, and supervise volunteers in gear issuing and maintenance best practices. 

  • Support staff with outreach and retention efforts: contacting members and helping them access appropriate resources. 

  • Update member information and trip reports in ETO database. 

  • Drive an AMC 12-passenger van as needed. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Dedication to AMC’s mission to make the outdoors accessible to youth living in under-resourced communities and other underserved groups. 

  • Professional or personal experience managing outdoor equipment and logistics for trips. Prior experience in outdoor education is preferred but not required. 

  • Self-directed with strong time management skills and attention to detail; demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects at once. 

  • Effective organizational skills and the ability to implement a system to organize gear usage. 

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and confidence engaging volunteers and members. 

  • Personal commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice.  

  • Up-to-date computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Suite and a willingness to learn and utilize Social Solution’s ETO database system. 

  • Ability to work a varied schedule. Some weekends, evenings, and overnights are required. Travel an average of once a week to remote gear sites and/or training locations. 

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and hold a valid driver’s license and a clear driving record. Driving record check and criminal background check will be performed. 

  • Physical abilities needed: Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds. Ability to move up and down ladders safely and proficiently. 

  • Willingness to participate in AMC’s Outdoor Leadership Training (preferred dates May 12-15).

An accommodation or exemption from the vaccine requirement will be considered if one is available that would not pose a direct threat to others in the workplace and would not create an undue hardship for the organization. 


The Appalachian Mountain Club has zero tolerance for child abuse or placing children in danger. The AMC requires all employees who work in a program or facility which serves children, disabled persons or the elderly to have a criminal background record check performed on their name annually with employment contingent upon satisfactory results.
