The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Center for Outdoor Learning and Leadership (COLL) is seeking a seasonal Youth Support and Curriculum Supervisor based out of Boston to facilitate curriculum on the history of public lands, and support BIPOC youth participating in wilderness programs.  The position is based out of our Boston (Charlestown) office, with travel to New Hampshire. This position is possibly partly remote. It is offered at 35 hours/week from February through December 2022 


Salary: $22-25 (USD) hourly 

 

Program Summary: Educators Outdoors, an initiative of COLL, is an outdoor education, professional development, and social justice program of the Appalachian Mountain Club. We partner with organizations and schools that serve youth from under- resourced communities and communities of color that have historically faced barriers to outdoor recreation. Through Outdoor Leadership Training, trip planning support, and access to gear lending libraries, we collaborate with educators and youth development professionals so they may foster impactful and relevant outdoor experiences for their youth. We envision a future where more youth enjoy the outdoors and where outdoor participation is reflective of every community, with equitable access for all. 

 

General Responsibilities: This is a grant funded position that will work both independently on projects and collaboratively with staff from different programs within the AMC to: 


  • Understandfacilitate, and build on an existing curriculum on the History of public lands, topics covered include race, class, gender, displacement, and genocide.  

  • Plan and deliver seasonal staff training to the Teen Wild program. 

  • Support general grant goals 

  • Advocate, and collaborate with partner programs on behalf of their scholarship youth. 

  • Organize systems to ensure proper end of year reporting (ie communicating, building systems with Teen Wild program) 

  • Provide program support for Educators Outdoors. 

  • Outreach, if needed for programs. 

  • Write a grant report at the end of the year in collaboration with the supervisor, grants team and Teen Wild team.  

 

 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Dedication to AMC’s mission to make the outdoors accessible to youth living in under-resourced communities and other underserved groups. 

  • Professional or personal experience facilitating conversations on race, class, land, gender, and genocide.  

  • Experience building trainings and or workshops.  

  • Prior experience in experiential education is preferred but not required. 

  • Self-directed with strong time management skills and attention to detail. 

  • Prior experience working with youth. 

  • Budget management skills. 

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills. 

  • Strong writing stills. 

  • Personal commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice.  

  • Up-to-date computer skills including Zoom. 

  • Ability to work a varied schedule. Some evenings and overnights are required. Travel in the spring and summer to NH required. 

  • Willingness to be available June 16-24th 

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and hold a valid driver’s license and a clear driving record. Driving record check and criminal background check will be performed.

An accommodation or exemption from the vaccine requirement will be considered if one is available that would not pose a direct threat to others in the workplace and would not create an undue hardship for the organization. 


The Appalachian Mountain Club has zero tolerance for child abuse or placing children in danger. The AMC requires all employees who work in a program or facility which serves children, disabled persons or the elderly to have a criminal background record check performed on their name annually with employment contingent upon satisfactory results
