What are the responsibilities and job description for the Behavioral Health Psychiatric Provider position at Appalachian Mountain Health?
Develop and maintain an outpatient integrated behavioral health practice within assigned ambulatory medical clinics of Appalachian Mountain Health (AMH). Conduct clinical evaluations which produce diagnostic findings to identify appropriate treatment plans. Implement behavioral treatment plans through the provision of quality, psychiatric medication management and evidence based behavioral therapy services to patients served by AMH. Operate within a fully integrated model of health care delivery by collaborating and coordinating with physicians, advanced practitioners, and all levels of clinical staff through a shared medical record to promote a healthy population. Work with referral coordinators, and directly with community resources, to facilitate outside referrals as needed.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Conducts psychiatric diagnostic evaluations in person or by telemedicine.
Performance Criteria:
- Performs Bio-psychosocial assessments
- Promotes and reviews the screening of patients for behavioral health concerns.
- Performs individual and family assessments through record review; provider consults, interviews of patients, caregivers and others as needed, observation, data collection, genograms, and administration of appropriate assessment tools.
- Performs comprehensive assessment for substance use disorder patients being considered for Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid or Alcohol Use Disorder
- Contributes to the patients Electronic Health Record (EHR) a report of the diagnostic findings and appropriate behavioral health recommendations.
- Demonstrates an ability to evaluate and triage a wide range of behavioral conditions (including development, cognition, depression, anxiety, somatization, trauma, danger, addictions, conduct and adjustment) in the context of a fast paced, medical care practice.
- Performs patient risk assessments as needed.
Delivers quality, evidence based behavioral health treatment in an integrated care model in person or by telemedicine.
Performance Criteria:
- Prescribes evidence based psychiatric medication treatment.
- Prescribes appropriate medications
- Provides appropriate patient education concerning the patient’s diagnosis and treatment.
- Monitors patient progress related to treatment, and adjusts treatment accordingly
- Recommends evidence based behavioral therapy services and collaborates with other internal providers to ensure access to those services including:
- Individual, family and group therapy
- SBIRT for substance use disorders
- Motivational Interviewing for chronic disease self-management, substance use disorders, and mental illness
- Episodic targeted brief interventions and psycho –education for depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders.
- Brief cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, or other appropriate interventions as indicated
- Communicates effectively with people of all ages who may have complex medical, developmental and behavioral conditions, and their caregivers.
- Supports practice by establishing outcome-based treatment plans, providing brief strategic interventions, and evaluating progress toward stated goals.
- Works with practice staff and care management to facilitate referrals to community mental health services when appropriate.
Maintains quality of clinical services provided.
Performance Criteria:
- Maintains accurate documentation within the Electronic Health Record (EHR), according to institutional, professional and insurance compliance standards, within 24 – 48 hours of clinical encounters
- Adheres to schedule by providing services within 15 – 30 minutes of scheduled appointment
- Keeps abreast of the most recent and accurate applicable research, patient care practices, coding and billing information.
- Releases patient information by adhering strictly to legal, ethical, hospital and department guidelines.
- Maintains institutional and departmental productivity standards of face-to-face patient contact.
- Monitors quality indicators and participates in quality improvement and program development initiatives as directed. Participates in data collection and compilation.
- Completes all necessary statistical reports and is accountable for accuracy.
Supports department by pursuing personal, professional, institutional and community development.
Performance Criteria:
- Maintains appropriate state clinical license in good standing.
- Participates in an appropriate level of ongoing clinical supervision.
- Participates in professional associations and networking as appropriate.
- Gathers updated knowledge regularly by participating approved pertinent continuing education.

Performance Criteria:
- Collaborates with medical provider colleagues to develop and maintain strong patient centered interdisciplinary teams.
- Attends departmental meetings and appropriate Mission Health meetings as requested.
- Participates by attending meetings and educational activities with the AMH behavioral health team.
- Participates in precepting and supervising learners as directed and appropriate, including supervision of integrated care behavioral health intern as needed.
- Supports the program by completing other duties as assigned or requested.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Certification as Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant: Additional certification as PMHNP or PA-C psych
- PMHNP or PA-C
- Full licensure with a minimum of one year postgraduate experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Three years postgraduate experience with one year experience providing psychiatric care in a medical setting. Familiarity with outpatient billing/coding procedures, NC Medicaid guidelines, local MH/SA/IDD resources. Depending on practice location- experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. Spanish speaking a plus.
