Position Overview

The Payroll Administrator oversees payroll, compensation, and benefits functions, ensuring alignment with UNC Health Appalachian business goals and strategies. This role administers system-wide compensation and benefits programs while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices. The Payroll Administrator collaborates with leadership, employees, and external partners to deliver accurate payroll processing and effective benefits administration.

Compensation is commensurate upon education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation range starts from $28.00 per hour .

  • Compensation is commensurate upon education & experience - range is $28.00 per hour or more. Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment from the new hire orientation date. This position is non-exempt and includes shift differentials for qualified shifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee payroll processing , compensation structures, and benefits administration to ensure compliance and efficiency.
  • Develop and implement solutions for payroll, compensation, and benefits based on business needs.
  • Ensure adherence to ERISA, COBRA, ACA, IRS, DOL, FLSA, and Wage and Hour regulations .
  • Provide guidance on compensation policies, payroll issues, and benefits programs to employees and leadership.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records, resolve discrepancies, and ensure timely payroll reporting .
  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, and external vendors to optimize benefits and compensation structures.
  • Position Requirements Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management or a related field required.
  • Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive HR experience , including payroll and timekeeping systems.
  • 3 years of payroll administration experience required.
  • Required Registration / License / Certification

  • No licensure required.
  • Preferred : Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Professional in Human Resources (PHR), or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of payroll, benefits administration, and compensation structures .
  • Strong understanding of federal and state laws related to HR, payroll, and benefits .
  • Proficiency in payroll software, time & attendance systems, and HRIS platforms .
  • Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills .
  • Physical Demands

  • Continuous sitting, standing, or walking for ≥ 8 hours per shift .
  • Speaking, reading, and writing for ≥ 8 hours per day .
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling ≥ 20 lbs .
  • Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, turning, and reaching.
  • Frequent hand, finger, and wrist repetition with moderate dexterity.
  • Working Conditions

  • Potential exposure to bloodborne diseases .
  • Exposure to electrical, mechanical, and power equipment hazards .
  • Irregular hours required , including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Extended periods of sitting, standing, and computer work required .
