Minimum qualifications :

  • Doctorate in music education, performance, or related field (must be completed by July 31, 2025)
  • At least three years of successful string teaching in a K-12 school setting
  • Specialized pedagogical content knowledge of teaching string instruments in a K-12 setting

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)

The School of Music seeks applicants with :

  • Education and experience in beginning string pedagogical approaches such as Suzuki, Rolland, String Project, etc.
  • Conducting experience with secondary school, college / university, or youth orchestras
  • Demonstrated successful teaching experience at the college or university level
  • Potential for publishing and presenting on music education research
  • Demonstrated capacity for effective recruitment
  • Experience with or knowledge of teacher licensure assessments such as student teacher observations and edTPA
  • Ability to contribute to Cannon Music Camp through string teaching and curriculum development

    Description of the Department or Unit

    HAYES SCHOOL OF MUSIC : The Hayes School of Music consists of 423 music students and 54 full-time faculty and offers undergraduate degrees in music education, music therapy, music industry studies and music performance with concentrations in instrumental or vocal performance, music theory / composition and sacred music. Graduate degrees are offered in music therapy and music performance with concentrations in instrumental or vocal performance, music theory / composition and conducting.

    The Hayes School of Music prepares young musicians for professional lives as performers, composers, music educators, music therapists, conductors, scholars, and music industry professionals, ensuring the next generation of musical leadership for the state, region, and nation.

    The Erneston Music Library, located in the Broyhill Music Center, supports the curriculum of the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music and the University, and contains books, scores, and recordings. In addition, the Special Collections Research Center in Belk Library contains a growing collection of rare book and manuscript materials relating to classical music. Highlights of the collection include the scores of conductor Hans Schwieger, the original manuscripts of composer Tui St. George Tucker, and the Matanya Ophee Collection, one of the largest collections of 19th-century guitar music in the world.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    We seek a dynamic string educator to join our music education faculty. This person will :

  • Teach undergraduate courses in string music education that will include Class Strings and String Orchestral Techniques and Literature along with other topics according to the candidate's qualifications and needs of the Hayes School of Music that could include : Appalachian Community Orchestra, Cultivating Creative Expression through Music Composition, Instrumental Playing Techniques, undergraduate or graduate String Pedagogy, Applied Lessons for majors and nonmajors
  • Supervise music education student teachers and practicum students in field placements
  • Develop and lead a community-based string program in collaboration with the Community Music School at the Hayes School of Music
  • Provide leadership for the string music education area, such as advising and mentoring string music education students, serving as advisor to the ASTA student chapter or other organizations that support professional studies in music education
  • Maintain a record of scholarly and creative activity and make substantive professional contributions to the field of music education / string education or pedagogy
  • Participate in music education faculty meetings, committees, and service activities, including recruitment
  • Serve the larger music education community through engagement with string educators across the state and region
  • Participate in Hayes School of Music meetings and other areas of committee service and curriculum development, as well as service activities to support the University
  • Other duties assigned by the Dean of the Hayes School of Music
  • In the Hayes School of Music, full-time tenure-eligible or tenured faculty members are expected to teach 24 full-time equivalent hours (FTEs) per academic year. A faculty member may request up to 6 FTEs annually for extensive scholarly or creative activity.

    Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    ABD Consideration :

    ABD with reduction in rank and salary (see desc. below)

    ABD Description

    ABD with reduction in rank and salary : ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

    No ABD consideration : Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
