Summary:

The Appeal-Democrat, a five-day daily newspaper based in Marysville, Calif., has an opening for a general assignment reporter. This is a full-time position. If you have a specific interest in covering certain topics, you will be allowed to flourish and grow a portfolio that could propel you further in your career. You will have the freedom to expand your experience in journalism and writing in ways that aren't often found at other publications. Historic Marysville is located in Yuba County in beautiful Northern California. Across the bridge is Yuba City, a growing city with a population over 70,000. The Yuba-Sutter region is diverse and has ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s also a short drive away from major cities such as Sacramento and San Francisco.

What you will do:

  • Excellent news judgment
  • Strong writing under deadline pressure
  • Experience handling multiple types of stories, from daily news articles to longer-term enterprise and features for special sections, quarterly publications and a monthly magazine
  • Some pagination duties (experience with InDesign is a plus)

What you will bring:

  • Some reporting experience is preferred
  • Excellent news judgment, strong writing skills and a drive to compete
  • Proficiency at using the web and social media to report stories and to share them
  • Strong grammatical skills and a working knowledge of the Associated Press stylebook
  • 4-year college degree (journalism or related fields) is preferred
  • This position reports to our Marysville office, with requirements to work regularly in that office
