Job Overview
GiftedApples is a home-based tutoring and homeschool business specializing in reading and math for students PreK-12 with learning disabilities. GiftedApples first founded as SchoolRoom Professional Tutors in 1991 and was formed as a nonprofit in 2016 as Apples Advance Literacy and Math. and GiftedApples Reading and Math. As a familiar business in the community, GiftedApples is seeking an additional professional educator or paraprofessional due to the number of parents requesting services. This will require GiftedApples relocating back to office spaces.
Qualifications
The qualifications for this position require a background in PreK-5 Elementary Education, Reading Intervention or Special Education. Candidates should have at least an Associate’s Degree with experience that support students with reading and math learning challenges. A Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, Reading Specialist or Intervention Specialist is preferred. The hours are part-time and would require that the candidate be able to work flexible hours Monday through Thursday and some Saturday hours.
Duties
- Provide individualized intervention tutoring for one student at-a-time in reading and literacy-related subjects such a rhyme, phonology, phonics and beginning reading.
- Support Director of program with 1-2 students with various learning levels and abilities reading and arithmetic.
- Understand some concepts of working with children with reading, math and attention challenges.
- Be familiar with some forms of screenings and assessments measures to determine skill level of K-4 students.
- Determine how results from assessments should be used to write learning plans and goals.
- Be able to research online grade level curriculum, to develop and implement lesson plans and target goals that align with each student's needs.
- Utilize positive reinforcement strategies that are effective in creating behavior conducive to learning.
- Communicate regularly with parents or guardians regarding student progress, learning modification and practice of redundancy for improvement.
- Demonstrate awareness of students' affective social and emotional behaviors and employ strategies that support students' feelings.
- Foster a nurturing atmosphere that encourages curiosity and a love for learning.
- Demonstrate knowledge of teaching methods which are evidence-based and capable of being modified and to and with Orton-Gillingham, Multisensory or Montessori teaching methods. when appropriate to accommodate students needs.
- Maintain accurate records that reflect student performance and progress on intended learning targets.
Requirements
- Experience working with children with reading (dyslexia), math (dyscalculia) attention deficit executive function and other specific learning impairments
- As with all educators, the candidate should have several materials from which she or he can use to tutor or teach or provide intervention to her/his students. Although GiftedApples has numerous resources, candidates should be willing to invest in additional learning materials for their students, as this is a standard practice with educators.
Skills
- Specific Skills required for this position are outstanding writing ability, outstanding English grammar and speaking skills, computer competence with Microsoft Word and talent for creative ideas in teaching and lesson planning. Some background in grantwriting or funding sources a plus.
