What are the responsibilities and job description for the Special Education Teacher of Students with Moderate Cognitive Impairments position at Appleview Elementary?
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Responsible for planning instruction and/or adaptation of the education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
- Experience working with students with moderate cognitive impairments and/or other developmental disabilities (preferred)
- Plan and direct the learning activities for small groups of students according to their academic and behavioral needs.
- Evaluate student performance using formal and informal assessment activities.
- Diagnose specific student needs, plan and carry out individualized programs for each student.
- Shape appropriate academic and social behaviors, to provide positive adult role models and to evaluate student performances.
- Develop and implement behavioral classroom structures and behavioral programs for students, including positive behavioral support plans.
- Plan and carryout classroom activities, community based instruction and other related educational experiences.
- Consult and coordinate instruction, behavioral management and other appropriate student services with other personnel who serve students with disabilities.
- Collaborate with general education staff to provide opportunities for inclusion with peers.
- Prepare and maintain lesson plans and documentation of student performance.
- Complete evaluation, assessment and screening of students.
- Plan appropriately to meet individual student's and program needs.
- Establish and maintain appropriate records, reports and procedures including, but not limited to, lesson plans, behavioral data and student progress on IEP goals/objects.
- Participate/coordinate IEPT and other meetings as requested/required.
- Provide direction and information to the teacher assistant(s).
- Build trust and confidence with colleagues, students and parents/guardians.
- Use various software packages for communication and documentation purposes.
- Maintain regular consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to physically attend to and coordinate student needs, including personal care, diapering and/or toileting, transfers to and from wheelchair, tube feeding, medication administration (oral, rectal and through gastric tube), augmentative communication, assistive technology devices and wheelchair mobility (if required).
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Adhere to Board Policies.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- CPR, CPI and/or Ukreru training is preferred (or ability to be trained).
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Must meet Michigan Department of Education requirements for full/temporary approval as a Teacher of students with Cognitive Impairments or teacher of Cognitively Impaired students.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with SA (Cognitive Impairment) Endorsement on certificate
