Position Title: Laboratory Technician
Reporting Relationship
Reports to: Staff Scientist
Supervises: None
Primary Purpose of Position
Manage the laboratory, inspection bays and all laboratory equipment. Develop standard operating procedures, provide for maintenance and servicing, and be knowledgeable on the operation of all laboratory equipment. Provide laboratory support for inspections being conducted by or held at AEGI. Ensure laboratory consumables are available when needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
Occasional field work in support of engineer/scientist consultants may be required. Work would entail assisting engineer/scientist to inspect, measure and/or photograph accident scenes, vehicles and/or equipment/machinery. Operate laboratory, inspection, and X-ray equipment as required.
Ensure that the SEM room, CT room and inspection bays are clean and neat.
Ensure that the Laboratory, SEM room, CT room and inspection bays are prepared for scheduled inspections, tests and projects.
Inventory tool boxes.
Be familiar with all laboratory equipment including operation of the equipment.
Ensure all equipment is operable. If not, inform the supervisor and coordinate the repair.
Keep an inventory of equipment calibration and send equipment for calibration as required.
Inventory and order laboratory equipment consumables as necessary to support inspections and projects as required.
Maintain the Laboratory library, order references needed and as approved by the board.
Coordinate the case with the client, set up a budget, determine if other personnel should be involved.
Prepare first draft of reports required in material failure cases and coordinate them through the review process.
Assist with advertising the Laboratory capabilities per the AEGI Goals.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skill
College graduate (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field helpful, not necessary)
Knowledge of setting up scientific studies (helpful, not necessary)
Basic knowledge of use of hand tools, screw drivers, wrenches, pliers, etc.
Basic knowledge of use of power tools, saws, drill presses, grinders, etc.
Knowledge of personal protective clothing required with various hazardous materials in the laboratory
Ability to perform Non-Destructive Testing of evidentiary assets (helpful, not necessary)
Problem Solving / Decision Making
Ability to evaluate material failure cases, obtain the help to evaluate and develop a plan of evaluation of the case and complete the evaluation and produce a draft report for review.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform moderately heavy work for periods of 2-3 hours, lift up to 40 pounds.
Ability to climb ladders.
Normal work environment
Work environment normally involves no physical risks or hazardous conditions. Occasionally, work which involves slight physical risks that require following basic safety precautions (wearing safety glasses, lab coats, and so on) or work which involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following detailed safety precautions (such as working with industrial machinery) may be required.
