What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Applied Control?
Purpose: Oversee all the accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliation and financial reporting. Lead day-to-day finance operations while managing accounting staff team members.
Controller Success Factors:
- Leading a team effectively through regular and productive cadence meetings. Provides timely feedback including performance assessments and coaching. Identify and assist in development of future leaders of Applied Control.
- Review Applied Control financial reports and supporting reconciliations on time with a high level of accuracy (minimal mistakes and/or errors).
- Manage workflow of direct reports to ensure deadlines are met, enhancements to current processes are discussed and changed as required and monitor workload to ensure an equitable distribution of duties.
- Engage with customers and vendors (both internal and external) as needed maintaining a professional demeanor and communication style that align with the core values of the Company.
Controller Responsibilities:
- Actively train, supervise and develop accounting staff with responsibilities that include Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Invoicing, Payroll, Fixed Assets and General Ledger functions
- Manage workflow of direct reports to ensure deadlines are met
- Oversee timely completion of bank account and other account reconciliations
- Monitor (and assist as necessary) the collections process of outstanding receivables handled by the Accounts Receivable Specialists
- Sales/Use Tax
- Oversee and verify the filing of sales/use tax returns for multiple states
- Primary owner of Vertex (sales tax software) monthly reconciliation and tax certificate maintenance
- Manage correspondence with various jurisdictions regarding sales tax as needed
- Leading a team through regular feedback and provide timely feedback including performance assessments and coaching
- Review and backup of bi-weekly payroll and support Payroll Specialist
- Prepare yearly personal property tax returns
- Produce and/or review monthly financial statements, with support of staff, that are on time with a high level of accuracy
- Lead the annual audit process with outside CPA firm including preparation of work papers and various analyses
- Lead the implementation of new accounting standards with support of CFO
- Prepare online payments (EFT and ACH) weekly and as needed and upload positive pay file
- Review and approve weekly check runs (electronic and physical)
- Work closely with warehouse personnel to enhance and strengthen the physical inventory and cycle counting controls
- Review of journal entries
- Recommend enhancements to current processes as well as develop new processes
- Lead projects or co-lead projects across functional groups
Controller Skills/Qualifications:

- 4-year degree required; Accounting/Finance degree or emphasis preferred; CPA preferred
- Experience managing a staff of ten or more
- 5 years of solid hands-on experience as an Accounting professional
- Minimum of intermediate skill level of Microsoft Excel necessary
Working Conditions: Includes working primarily in an office setting and/or visiting other locations. Role will require overnight travel possibly once a quarter, as needed. Must be able to carry laptop.
This role resides on-site in Englewood Colorado.
Compensation: Base Wage Range: $125,000 to $150,000 annually Prior work or industry experience as well as job-related education and unique skills will be taken into consideration when setting the wage rate.
Other Variable Compensation: Eligible for participation in the annual profit share and bonus program, based on company and individual performance.
