Position Description

Join Applied Medical as a First Article Inspector for the Metrology team and play a crucial role in ensuring the precision and quality of our medical devices. You will support our Engineering and Machining departments by meticulously inspecting materials, tooling, and fixtures to meet strict dimensional specifications. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with a strong technical aptitude and proficiency in operating advanced measurement equipment. This position is on 2nd shift, Monday-Friday 2:30 PM-11:00 PM.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Precision First Article Inspection: Perform detailed first article inspections, ensuring all materials, tooling, and fixtures meet engineering specifications, adhering to established procedures and under supervision.
  • Equipment Operation and Measurement: Proficiently operate measurement equipment, including Keyence IM 7030T, Nikon VMR systems, calipers, micrometers, and block gages, following prescribed methods.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Accurately document inspection results and assist in updating inspection instructions, metrology reports, and other engineering documentation.
  • Fixture Development: Assist in the setup and use of inspection fixtures, contributing to process improvement under guidance.
  • GD&T and Blueprint Interpretation: Accurately interpret engineering drawings and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) specifications for inspection purposes.
  • Teamwork and Coordination: Work closely with Metrology Technicians and Polymer Process Development teams in inspecting materials, tooling, and fixtures, following established protocols

Performance Objectives: 

 

Within your first 30 days: 

  • Complete all Applied Learning foundational courses and review relevant documentation, including standard operation procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and quality records to familiarize yourself with organizational structure and procedures.
  • Understand the basic functionality and operation of metrology equipment used, gaining proficiency in measurement methods under supervision.
  • Gain basic proficiency in software programs used for metrology, following established procedures.
  • Develop basic troubleshooting skills to identify minor issues with measurement equipment under supervision.
  • Familiarize yourself with Applied Medical’s QMS, including quality policies, procedures, and relevant metrology standards.
  • Learn to accurately document measurement results, including data and procedures, following established formats.
  • Understand and adhere to safety protocols while handling metrology equipment.
  • Shadow experienced metrology technicians and first article inspectors to learn best practices and gain practical insights.

Within 60 days: 

  • Demonstrate independence in operating assigned metrology equipment under supervision for most inspections.
  • Show independence and accuracy in documenting measurement results.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and contribute to collaborative efforts.

Within 90 days to one year: 

  • Develop specialized expertise in assigned areas of metrology through training and guidance.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in challenging inspection methods and drawing callouts.
  • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives under supervision.
  • Develop effective working relationships with internal teams, understanding their metrology needs.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements and quality system standards through accurate documentation and adherence to procedures.

Position Requirements

  • High School Diploma, technical trade school training, or equivalent technical experience.
  • Familiarity with metrology software, measurement equipment, and tools.
  • Experience in reading and interpreting engineering drawings per American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.5 and GD&T.
  • Experience with computer programs, including spreadsheets and word processing.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to metrology and quality control.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Preferred

  • Experience with designing fixtures or tooling in SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
  • Experience drafting engineering documents such as Manufacturing and Quality Instructions, test methods, drawings, and test reports.
  • Working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Gage R&R.
  • Proficiency in GD&T, tolerance stack up, and manufacturing processes for precision machined parts.
