Position Description
We are a dynamic and rapidly growing company, committed to delivering cutting-edge solutions across a diverse set of enterprise systems. We are seeking a Senior Engineer, Virtualization & Containerization to oversee and drive our infrastructure initiatives in these key areas. This is a hands-on role with strong growth potential as we expand our enterprise infrastructure strategy.
Role Overview:
As the Senior Engineer, Virtualization & Containerization, you will be responsible for overseeing the operation, optimization, and modernization of our virtualization and containerization platforms. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer. You will work with a team of skilled professionals, drive best practices, and ensure our virtualization and containerized environments are scalable, resilient, and cost-efficient.
This is a hands-on technical role where you will be expected to contribute technically while also collaborating with other departments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical Thought Leadership:
- Provide technical expertise and guidance on best practices for managing virtualized and containerized environments.
- Help shape the future growth of the virtualization and containerization platforms
- Virtualization & Containerization Strategy:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations and performance of our virtualization platforms (mainly VMware).
- Develop a long-term virtualization strategy for the company by evaluate alternatives to VMware, focusing on:
- Open-source alternatives to VMware (e.g., OpenStack, Canonical, Red Hat).
- Enterprise solutions like Azure Local (Azure Stack HCI) and Nutanix.
- Manage and optimize containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes, Rancher, Azure Kubernetes) to ensure high availability, performance, and security.
- Evaluate and implement emerging technologies to improve scalability and efficiency.
- Infrastructure Operations & Optimization:
- Collaborate with the automation teams to develop and implement automation strategies to streamline deployments, scaling, and management of virtualized and containerized workloads.
- Work closely with network, cloud, and systems teams to ensure seamless integration between virtualization, containerization, and cloud environments.
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and drive proactive improvements to reliability and efficiency.
- Collaboration & Cross-Functional Engagement:
- Work closely with engineering, security, and operations teams to align virtualization and containerization initiatives with business objectives.
- Contribute to architectural discussions and provide recommendations on infrastructure modernization efforts.
- Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and post-mortems related to virtualization and container platforms.
- Security, Compliance, and Cost Optimization:
- Ensure compliance with company security policies, industry regulations, and best practices for virtualization and containerization.
Optimize resource utilization and cost-efficiency across virtualized and containerized environments.
Performance Objectives:
Within your first 30 days: Learning & Assessment
• Get fully onboarded with the team, tools, and infrastructure.• Review current virtualization and containerization architectures, including Azure Stack HCI, Nutanix, OpenStack, and Kubernetes environments.• Identify key challenges and areas for improvement in virtualization and containerization strategies.• Meet with key stakeholders (engineering, security, operations) to understand business objectives and infrastructure priorities.
Within 60 days: Strategy & Initial Execution
• Develop a roadmap for improving or migrating virtualization and containerization operations.• Begin implementing automation improvements for virtualization and container deployments.• Establish monitoring and performance optimization plans for existing virtualized and containerized workloads.• Ensure best practices for security, compliance, and cost optimization are in place.
Within 90 days to one year: Leadership & Scaling
• Participate in the ownership of virtualization and containerization operations.• Provide strategic recommendations on long-term virtualization technology investments.• Begin shaping the team structure for future growth into an Enterprise Systems & Virtualization Manager role.• Deliver measurable improvements in system performance, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Position Requirements
• More than seven years of experience in enterprise virtualization and containerization.• Hands-on expertise with Azure Stack HCI, Nutanix, OpenStack, Red Hat KVM, and/or Canonical.• Strong background in Kubernetes, Docker, and container orchestration.• Experience in automating and optimizing virtualization and container operations.• Leadership experience in mentoring and guiding engineering teams.• Familiarity with security best practices, cost optimization, and compliance in virtualized environments.
