Position Description
We are seeking a Senior Automation Engineer specializing in infrastructure orchestration to design and implement automation solutions that enhance scalability, resiliency, and operational efficiency across our IT infrastructure. This role focuses on streamlining system administration, reducing manual effort, and improving system reliability through scripting, configuration management, and modern ops methodologies. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in system administration, automation frameworks, patch management, and monitoring, with a strong emphasis on scripting. They will play a key role in optimizing IT processes, supporting both on-premises and Azure cloud environments, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive automation initiatives. While not initially a leadership role, strong leadership skills are essential for future growth. This position is expected to influence strategy, mentor team members, and drive organization-wide automation efforts. Maintaining comprehensive documentation and ensuring seamless operational support will also be critical responsibilities
- Install, test, maintain, migrate, and consolidate data center software and hardware, including physical servers, storage, networking equipment telecommunications and peripherals.
- Monitor vendor sites for new releases, patches, and product announcements.
- Manage the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes.
- Maintain security of assigned hardware, software, and network systems.
- Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required; configure CPU, memory and disk partitions as required.
- Work with team members, technical staff, and vendors to perform or assist with diagnosing and resolving errors, malfunctions, and disaster recovery of assigned systems.
- Coordinate all planned activities with team members and the information technology (IT) team.
- Develop and provide technical training and support.
- Provide backup to department staff, as needed.
- Prepare and maintain documentation, records, and reports related to assigned systems, service requests, project status, and assisted activities.
- Integrate equipment and ensure adaptation with the existing infrastructure.
- Identify areas of improvement to continually improve service quality and reduce costs.
Position Requirements
- Minimum of five years’ experience with system administration with a focus on scripting, automation, or configuration management.
- Comfortable with reviewing code, scripting, and automating various IT processes, such as PowerShell, Bash/Shell, and Python.
- Experience supporting container-based orchestration and deployment systems, such as Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
- Working knowledge of configuration management systems, including Chef, Ansible, Puppet, and SCCM.
- Proficient monitoring tools and frameworks, including Splunk, ELK, and Nagios.
- Experience with infrastructure as code principles and tools, such as Terraform, Ansible, and DSC.
- Familiarity of report building technologies, including SQL and Power BI.
- Foundational knowledge of Linux, Unix, and Windows.
- Exposure working with database systems, including Microsoft SQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, RDS and MySQL.
- Exposure with continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) principles and tools, such as Git, Gitlab, and Jenkins.
- Experience with technical deep dives into system performance bottlenecks.
- Skilled at monitoring tools and frameworks, including Solarwinds, Splunk, and Elk.
- Advanced knowledge of data center and cloud-connected infrastructure, such as hyper-converged systems, servers, routers, network attached storage (NAS) and storage area network (SAN) systems, switches (physical and software-defined), firewalls, web and spam filters, load balancers, server and desktop virtualization, and cloud computing.
- Advanced knowledge of data center software (operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows, Linux and UNIX, patches, virus protection, Microsoft Office platforms including SharePoint and Teams, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, Microsoft Exchange, ID management systems, and databases, such as Microsoft SQL, Oracle, and Postgress).
- Knowledge of information technology service processes (ITIL) and best practices.
- Work and remain calm in a fast-paced, pressurized environment.
- Perform multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field.
- Five years' experience working in a lead capacity to support an IT infrastructure.
- Technology certificates, such as Microsoft (MCSE, M365F, MCAF, MCASEA, MCAA), VMware (VCP, VCTA, VCAP, VCDX), Cisco (CCNA, CCNE, CCNP, CCIE, CCSP), CISSP, CompTIA A , or ITIL.
- Experience working with deployment, configuration, and maintenance of SAN systems, Cisco switches, Microsoft Windows servers, Red Hat Linux servers, Microsoft SQL. databases, Oracle databases, Microsoft Exchange, Office 365, Windows and MAC OSX, VMware technologies, and SAP.
- Scripting proficiency to automate repetitive tasks or integrate systems, such as PowerShell, Shell, Bash, Python, or Perl.
