Position Description
Are you an experienced Technician within the environmental sustainability field? Join our team at Applied Medical and you will play a key role in supporting initiatives that reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable practices. In this role, you’ll assist in monitoring, maintaining, and improving systems that align with the organization’s sustainability goals. Key Responsibilities:
- Hazardous Waste Management: Safely handle and consolidate hazardous waste, oily water, used oils, and alcohol from various departments into designated storage facilities.
- Waste and Chemical Handling: Follow strict protocols for waste classification, labeling, and storage to ensure compliance with environmental regulations as well as following safety guidelines for handling and transporting chemicals.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all waste handling and storage practices adhere to local, state, and federal environmental regulations and maintain accurate records of hazardous material collection, transportation, and disposal.
- Spill Response: Act as a first responder to spills, ensuring proper containment and cleanup using approved methods and equipment.
- Site Management and Logistics: Regularly travel to various buildings (e.g., RSM, LF, and Irvine) to perform waste collection, storage maintenance, and other sustainability tasks. Use a company truck or personal vehicle for transportation as required.
Performance Objectives:
Within your first 30 days:
- Successfully complete the 5-day hazardous waste class, gaining comprehensive knowledge of waste handling procedures, proper use of PPE, and spill response.
- Learn and demonstrate proper spill containment and cleanup techniques, including when to escalate issues.
- Familiarize yourself with the environmental sustainability systems across different sites (RSM, LF, Irvine), including storage areas for hazardous materials.
Within your first 60 days:
- Begin independently collecting and consolidating hazardous waste from various departments, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and use PPE correctly and consistently when handling hazardous materials.
- Actively participate in spill response drills and apply learned techniques to contain and clean up minor spills while reporting any issues or concerns promptly to senior team members.
- Begin traveling between sites (RSM, LF, and Irvine), using company truck or personal vehicle as required, to manage waste collection and storage tasks.
Within you first 90 days:
- Independently manage hazardous waste collection, consolidation, and storage across sites with minimal supervision while ensuring proper labeling, documentation, and compliance with environmental regulations.
- Respond to spill incidents independently, demonstrating a high level of competence in containment, cleanup, and reporting.
- Support ongoing environmental sustainability initiatives within the department.
Position Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent experience.
- Previous exposure to or experience in a hazardous waste or environmental setting is necessary.
- Willingness to undergo training and adhere to safety guidelines for handling hazardous materials and waste.
- A highly energetic and self-motivated individual eager to learn and grow within the environmental sustainability field.
- Must be a great listener who can follow instructions clearly and accurately.
Preferred
- Relevant certifications or training in hazardous waste management or safety protocols is a plus but not required.
- Enthusiastic about ongoing learning and professional development, especially in environmental sustainability practices and hazardous materials management.
- Ability to maintain a positive and professional demeanor, even in challenging or high-pressure situations.
