Applied Physical Sciences is looking for a highly motivated and entrepreneurial Senior Financial and Commercialization Specialist to join our Groton, CT team with the primary objective of supporting the creation and oversight of internal business ventures stemming from recently developed maritime technologies. This initiative involves mature and classified technologies that are critical to the U.S. Navy and which are being considered for accelerated development and employment in near-term operational scenarios. The ideal candidate will combine business acumen, financial planning and analysis expertise, and leadership skills to ensure mission success, manage financial health, and support the company’s broader growth strategy. The Senior Financial and Commercialization Specialist will directly support our senior leadership and project managers in the execution of a limited scale commercial trial of technologies and further the viability of business plans with an emphasis on identifying and mitigating business risks, establishment and validation of financial models, and collaboration with potential customers. Responsibilities
- Support APS leadership in the development of business plans which supports rapid employment of innovative new technologies within the U.S. Navy and which also includes the identification of potential business risks and associated mitigation approaches.
- Lead development of financial models for the potential ventures to include up-front investment, cash flow, return-on-investment, and financial liabilities.
- With support from the engineering team, lead development of pricing models, manufacturing plan, technology evolution plan, and strategies for scaling.
- Support execution of commercial trials. Leverage technical and financial data from commercial trials to refine assumptions within cost models and to reduce overall business risk.
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements.
- Build and maintain relationships with government agencies, commercial entities, and other stakeholders to support technology adoption and to position initiatives for long-term success.
- Support the APS G&A team with special projects which may include implementation of systems and processes to improve administrative efficiencies.
- Highly-motivated, driven, self-starter
- Active or ability to gain SECRET clearance
- Advanced degree in business (e.g., an MBA) with a focus in finance or entrepreneurship
- Experience with or general understanding of government contracting mechanisms
- Strong financial acumen with proven experience in developing business plans including preparing financial projections and models, analyzing cash flows, and performing risk assessments.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or related science
- Prior experience with DoD and preferably U.S. Navy
- Prior experience working in an R&D environment and working closely with an engineering team
- Familiarity with regulatory and legal requirements for defense and commercial technologies
- Familiarity with International Traffic in Arms Regulations and Export Administration Regulations
- Experience in the area of Undersea Systems and Technology
- Project Management experience or PMP certification could be beneficial
- Experience with full product lifecycle planning
- Support Government property administration, audits, and closeout activities;
- Interface with APS purchasing and supply chain administrators to ensure compliance with prime contract requirements, corporate policies and approved business systems;
- Understand and recommend opportunities and approaches to minimize exposure to contractual risk; and
- Perform government regulation research and other duties as may be assigned.
