Applied Precision Design
Redwood, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/5/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/1/2025

About Applied Precision Design:

Applied Precision Design is a small and innovative private engineering firm that specializes in the design and prototyping of custom precision mechanical systems for Research and Development. Our projects are tailored to meet unique and complex requirements of our customers in diverse sectors such as Optics and Metrology, Semiconductors, Electron Beam microscopes, high vacuum, and bio-imaging systems. APD’s mission is to empower scientists to develop new technologies that are important and meaningful for the world. Our office is in a convenient, fun, and urban setting in downtown Redwood City, CA (a block from Caltrain Station). As a small company we offer a fun, flexible, and collaborative work environment while taking pride in producing high-quality work.

About the Role:

We are seeking a responsible, proactive, and experienced Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team. The candidate would lead the design of complex and innovative precision mechanical systems through close collaboration with other senior engineers and scientists in a group setting, while being responsible for leading projects from requirements and concepts through manufacturing and testing. The ideal candidate would be passionate about learning new skills and abilities by collaborating with a cross-functional team to develop and review the projects, while teaching and mentoring younger engineers.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead the design of precision mechanical systems incorporating flexures, bearings, kinematic couplings, custom XYZ stages, opto-mechanical mounts and custom bellows in ultra clean and high vacuum environments.
  • Lead weekly engineering meetings to gather requirements, present design concepts, generate action items and carefully move projects through various phases. Present and lead formal engineering design reviews (CDR & DDR).
  • Generate detailed 3D CAD models and detailed drawings using SolidWorks PDM. Create and manage Bill of Materials, add detailed geometric tolerances, weld symbols, and O-rings dovetails. Perform engineering calculations such as basic thermal, vibration, stiffness calculations and structural FEA analysis.
  • Manage and interact with suppliers, manage the prototyping cycles, create engineering interface documents, and perform mechanical assembly, fit-checks, rework and debugging of new mechanical systems. Test and integrate into the larger system.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5-10 years of relevant precision design experience.
  • Participated in leading full machine design cycles: from generating requirements through generating complex CAD designs to fabrication and assembly.
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD Design, CNC machining, manufacturing processes, material finishes and precision components such as custom bearings, stages, encoders, interferometers.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, including mechanics, heat transfer, and vibration analysis.
  • Effective communication skills with generating PowerPoint presentations and interface drawings, and formal presentations of Concept and Detail Design Reviews.
  • Experienced in working in a multidisciplinary engineering team and leading projects through phases. Passionate about continual learning and sharing knowledge within a team environment.
  • Exposure to the field of precision mechanics (robotics, stages, vacuum systems, clean environments, opto-mechanics, lasers, etc.) and systems achieving high stability and thermal drift within microns or nanometers.
