- Provides leadership and supervision to all custodians assigned to the building. Responsible for conducting evaluations of each team member. Plays a major role in hiring, training, and dismissing all staff. Approves and tracks sick and vacation time. Maintains a written house cleaning and maintenance schedule.
- Services, cleans, sanitizes and supplies classrooms, restrooms, administrative offices, gymnasium, conference rooms, cafeteria, hallways, stairs, sinks, drinking fountains, break rooms and mechanical shops to provide a safe and clean teaching and learning environment for students and staff. This includes sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, waxing, buffing, cleaning of cabinets, woodwork, shades/blinds, ceilings, showers, blackboard, carpets, garbage cans, wastebaskets, windows, and other areas of the school building according to district standards (includes loading and unloading of supply and service deliveries, filling and emptying power equipment with fuel and cleaning chemicals).
- To provide building safety, the assistant custodian monitors building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking/unlocking and checking doors before, during and after operating hours as well as checking windows, lights on/off, rooms, entries, electrical appliances and environmental systems used to ensure that hazards are not created; promptly reports any damages or security problems to Chief Custodian and/or Coordinator of Building and Grounds; notifies supervisors concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
- To ensure year-round school safety and building maintenance standards are met, perform seasonal outside grounds work, interior deep cleaning and scheduled cleaning (to include but not be limited to litter pick-up of outside grounds, snow removal of walk ways; furniture moving, installation of new furniture and equipment; wall washing, floor waxing/stripping, painting, dusting and special projects).
- Regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job in order to maintain a student’s regular routines, foster student learning and build student relationships; the ability to perform the identified tasks and possess the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the identified work activities; the ability to perform the identified physical requirements.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Coordinator of Buildings and Grounds.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Under direction of the Coordinator of Buildings and Grounds, the Chief Custodian supervises, coordinates, and performs environmental service tasks, cleaning and maintenance of school buildings, mechanical repairs, support services for day and evening school activities, boiler observation and evening security for assigned building. This position assists in providing a safe, clean learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Below are the qualifications for this position:
- Must be eligible for State of Delaware Certification as a Chief Custodian.
- Must have at least five years of experience in custodial work.
- Must have at least three years of experience in supervising staff.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- High School Diploma.
- Valid Class D Driver’s License with good driving record.
- Have knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment and procedures.
- Be able to perform maintenance, general cleaning of building, classrooms and cafeteria.
- Ability to follow oral or written directions.
- Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, students, administrators, co-workers and the public.
- Have good physical health and strength to perform the routine duties of lifting and cleaning.
- Criminal background check and Tuberculin testing.

The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain skills. Ability to perform work requiring sustained moderate physical effort, operation of commercial food service equipment, movement of objects weighing 40-50 pounds and continuous standing.

The work environment involves exposure to materials, equipment, and situations that requires following safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. The potential for risks and hazards can be significantly minimized with proper training, skills, and proper use of safety equipment and risk management procedures.

- All persons employed by the Appoquinimink School District are required to submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test.
