Responsible for guiding corporate safety, sustainability and environmental policies and programs. This individual will provide leadership company-wide to ensure a safe workplace and compliance with all safety, health and environmental regulations and policies. Additionally, they will maintain and promote a safe and engaging workplace to ensure all employees, customers, contractors and visitors are safe.
Responsibilities
Leadership:
- Lead, develop, and promote a corporate safety, environmental, and sustainability culture that permeates thru the full organization to ensure the health of our team members, compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate safety policies, and organizational objectives.
- Establish a strong EHS presence as a visible leader on the manufacturing plant, distribution facility floors to fully engage employees, supervisors, contractors and vendors in EHS processes, expectations and requirements.
Liaison to external agencies
- Maintain positive and proactive relationships as Company representative with government agencies on safety, environmental and health matters affecting the Company. Manage compliance with government regulations, permitting, training, reporting, and corporate policies/procedures.
- Oversee workers compensation and claim management including working with insurance carrier, resolving claims and overseeing return to work activities with medical facilities and supervisors.
- Coordinate the services of insurance carriers and outside consulting personnel.
EHS Program management:
- Develop, implement and manage EHS programs, policies and procedures to ensure they are current and in compliance with all federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes and rules.
- Build, develop and foster a strong relationship with all union personnel and representatives to promote a strong safety, environmental, and team member health record, and foster a culture committed to a safe operating environment. EHS management representation in daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly management meetings (including safety committee meetings).
- Develop and manage corporate sustainability efforts to minimize hazardous/non-hazardous waste, water emissions, air emissions, energy consumption, and other related environmental compliance activities.
- Coordinate with manufacturing, engineering, etc., on the design and construction of new equipment, facilities and processes to insure safe product and workplace design.
- Identify potential or actual risks through workplace surveys, safety audits and inspections of facilities, machinery, equipment, and personnel practices to identify safety/health concerns, develop solutions and implement corrective actions.
- Provide information to top management on accidents, causes, and costs and recommend long-range accident reduction and cost containment objectives.
- Ensure all the organization is compliance and applicable management & team members are equipped, trained in safe practices that include:
- Hazardous communications, blood borne pathogens, respirator use, lock-out/tag-out, forklift operation, safe lifting, First Aid/CPR/AED and emergency preparedness that is required to remain in compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Programs required by OSHA, such as hearing tests, hazard communication program, and required record keeping – updated & maintained material safety data sheets.
- The design, maintenance, and inspection of machine and equipment guards, overhead lifting equipment, hoists, production machinery and equipment, etc. Including a reporting.
- Personal protection equipment such as safety glass, safety shoe and protective clothing policies. Oversee the purchase and supply of safety related equipment.
- An effective reporting & resolution program that effectively resolves potential unsafe conditions and reinforces a safety first culture across the organization.
Environmental Sustainability:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability and environmental responsibility strategy aligned with the Company’s mission, values, and business objectives.
- Oversee and prepare sustainability reporting, ensuring accurate and transparent communication of progress to internal and external stakeholders. Stay up to date with relevant regulations and industry standards.
- Maintains global compliance calendars for environmental permitting and reporting requirements and ensures adherence.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational, Health and Safety Sciences or related technical field or equivalent experience.
- 10 years of related experience in program management in an Environmental, Health and Safety capacity in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience with OSHA programs such as IIP, Haz-Comm, Ergonomics, Lockout-Tag[1]out, Emergency Response, Powered Industrial Trucks, and other related OSHA requirements
Preferred:
- Experience working in multiple locations
- CSHM (Certified Safety and Health Manager) or CSMP (Certified Safety Management Practitioner) certification and First Aid and CPR certifications.
Requires a knowledge of OSHA regulations; local, state, and federal environmental and occupation health and safety requirements; workers compensation regulations, and SARA, EPA, and ADA requirements.
- Knowledge of LOTO, Hazard Communication, EAP, Hearing Conservation, PPE, Hot Works, Confined Space, Respiratory Protection, First Aid, AED, BBP and First Responder programs.
- Knowledge of Job Hazard Analysis.
- Experience developing and leading Safety Teams
- Experience standardizing processes.
