Job Description

The Machinist Journeyman at Redhawk Power Plant supports the safe, efficient and cost-effective production of electric energy by performing mechanical maintenance and repair of power plant equipment including machining, assembly and disassembly of equipment, investigating, correcting mechanical malfunctions and performing plate welding duties. Writes/reviews work scope and hazard/risk assessment of the work assignment. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements: Reasonable and necessary overtime will be required. Shift work may be required.
Qualifications: Must qualify as a Machinist or equivalent.

Minimum Requirements:
Must successfully complete Machinist Apprenticeship or demonstration of equivalent skills and knowledge.Pass the mechanical aptitude test (MASS).

Major Accountabilities:
1. Read work orders, technical manuals, blueprints, and diagrams related to the work assignment.
2. Knowledge of APM and safety standards related to Machinist work such as personal protective equipment, hazardous material handling, MSDS, confined space entry, asbestos containing material (ACM) awareness, company LOTO procedures, ladder safety, all material contained in the ACM.
3. The safe use of hand, power and pneumatic tools and measuring devices.
4. The safe operation of rigging for moving equipment with mobile equipment and lifting devices.
5. Performs preliminary testing of equipment such as vibration analysis and thermal imaging using vibration meters and heat guns.
6. Inspects internal parts of mechanical equipment for defects, excessive wear and broken parts by visually examining parts and by using rules, calipers, micrometers and other precision measuring devices.
7. Diagnoses mechanical problems and determines corrective action checking blueprints and repair manuals.
8. Fabricates replacement parts to specifications such as shafts, bearing housings, or other parts using machine tools such as metal lathes, milling machines, drill presses, band saws, surface grinders, and other various machines for special purposes.
9. Aligns parts of the mechanical equipment utilizing industry best practices and techniques, torques nuts and bolts, positions parts to set specified LOTOs between moving and stationary parts using hand and power tools, lifting devices, jigs and measuring devices.
10. Knowledge of metal properties and machining procedures including layout, positioning and securing work pieces, computing dimensions, tolerances and angles and selecting cutting speeds, feed rates and depths of cuts and lathes, milling machinery, drill presses, metal cutting equipment, surface grinders, etc.
11. Reassembles internal parts including bushings, bearings, sleeves, rings, liners, mechanical seals, packing gears and wheels; reassembles housing, and installs the mechanical equipment back in the system.
12. Performs overhaul and repair related to mechanical maintenance and machine work on boilers, generators, steam and combustion turbines, pulverizers, large compressors and boiler feed pumps as a member of a work team involving the safe coordination of multiple projects in close proximity, communicating with others to dissemble, move, and replace large pieces of equipment and meet outage schedules.
13. Cleans, adds/replaces fluids, changes filters and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other moving machinery parts, inspects and adjusts belts, packing, rollers, and pulleys for preventative maintenance.

Additional Information

This position is located at Redhawk Power Plant in Arlington, AZ. Selected candidate must live within reasonable distance from plant.
Plate welding requirements: Training is required to maintain proficiency in the craft.

Plant/FieldRole:
This position requires work to be performed in the field and/or at the work site, due to the nature of work.

Location-BasedRole:
This position requires employees to work at the (Location), with some flexibility. Flexibility will be determined with the hired employee and leadership.

FlexRole:
This position is not required to be performed at a specific APS facility as long as adequate technology and a solid ergonomic set up are present. Pending agreement with leadership, employees hired into this role will be able to choose where they prefer to perform their work. Employees will have two options to choose from:

  • APS office based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from an APS facility.
  • Home based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from his/her home.

*Employees in Flex roles are required to reside in Arizona (or NM for Four Corners-based employees). Role types are subject to change based on business need.
