Unit MedSurg/Tele
# Beds 38 average census 22-27
Nurse:Patient Ratios 1:05
Required certifications (i.e., BLS, ACLS?) BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
Common diagnoses/Types of patients "Basic surgical-appys, choles, etc, some ortho-shoulders, hips, knees; basic cardiac, day 2 post STEMI, medical, COPD, suicidal pts, renal disease, large geriatric population-lots of wounds, bedsores, some trauma
Wound care nurse in house M-F will set up tx plan for floor RNs to follow"
Experience or 'Must have' skills "Must have at least 1 year experience at least
Ok with 1st time traveler"
Are RNs required to titrate drips? no
Common titratable &/or set rate drips Dopamine, Amiodarone, and Cardizem- all set rate
Are there tele/monitor techs on this unit? Are RNs required to read their own strips? What brand are the tele monitors? "Tele tech on the unit
RN MUST be able to 100% read and interpret strips"
Charge Nurse/House Supervisor? Does the charge nurse take an assignment? Charge nurse available- will take patients usually their max is 1:2
Are there nurse aids on this unit/Ratios yes occasionally- 2 scheduled on days and nights
RT Equipment (i.e., Cpap, BiPap, High Flow, vents, etc.) Occasionally will have home regimen CPAP
Shifts & Scheduling (Do you allow self-scheduling? Block scheduling?) "12 hour shifts starting at 6:45
Travelers fill in the gaps on first schedule, will try to get travelers a block schedule after that"
Weekend Requirement every other weekend
Holiday Requirement rotate in with core staff
Is there Call or a Standby requirement? No
Floating Requirements? intermixed between tele and MS on this floor. May float to ICU or ER to care for overflow. Will float in perm staff rotation
Scrub Color/Dress Code/Scrubs provided? Navy - undershirts must be navy. Scrub jackets are optional, must be navy.
Unit/Department specific orientation "Day 1 policies and procedures, access to systems, agency gets a packet with items to know
2 shifts on the floor with a preceptor, if they have Meditech experience they will only get 2 days of orientation on the floor"
Additional Notes Several travelers have extended or came back, very traveler friendly
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive patient care in a Med/Surg Telemetry unit, including assessment and monitoring of vital signs.
- Administer medications and IV therapies, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
- Collaborate with healthcare teams to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Perform catheterization, tube feeding, and airway management as needed.
- Maintain accurate patient records using EHR systems and Meditech.
- Ensure compliance with ACLS and BLS certification requirements during patient interactions.
