Duties: is a Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for overseeing patient care
and administrative activities in their respective department(s)/unit(s). The Nurse Shift Manager (NSM)
will continually evaluate quality and effectiveness of patient care practices and care delivery.
Medical/clinical knowledge, technical skills, clinical judgment, interpersonal skills and communication
skills as indicated in the current Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (CAMH) are
essential components of nursing management. Promotes staffing compliance and insures safe staffing
assignments. Monitors staffing to achieve productivity and budget standards. The NSM performs within
the scope and standards of practice set for the by the American Nurses Association and any
professional organizations specific to specialty to guide practice and standards within the work place.
The NSM with the ability to hire, coach, counsel, evaluate, discipline others. He/She has
the responsibility and authority to assign work, duties and responsibilities, to direct staff, and exercise
independent judgment. The Clinical Supervisor develops, revises and ensures compliance with
hospital/departmental policy and procedures, standards of care, and professional practice acts. Serves
as a model by providing leadership expertise, and serves as a clinical and administrative resource to
others.
- Unit: 4W Telemetry
- # beds: 31 beds (11 private & 10 semi-private)
- Certs: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS are required
- Ratios: 1 to 4
- EMR: Cerner experience preferred. Make sure to ask if they already have Cerner experience & if so, was this recent? They can comp test out of Cerner training.
- Unit: MedSurg/Oncology
- # beds: 27
- Certs: BLS, ACLS, Chemo cert is bonus
- Ratios: 1 to 5 if med surg, 1 to 4 if chemo/tele patient
- Charge Nurse: Nurse Shift Managers -do not take patient assignments, also staff a resource nurse to help w/ tasks and breaks etc
-Unit: ER Hold may be required
- Floating: Travelers are the 1st to float. Could possibly float between MSW & MHB because they are under the same license, travelers may float between the two. They would float to 2W MedSurg remote tele, MedSurg SW, some to ICU for tele MS hold, or ER holds.
- Floor specific orientation: 1-2 shifts w/ preceptor
- Common diagnosis / Types of patients: Post pacer, hemodialysis, no cardiac/surgical patients, new onset afib, or RVR. CP sent out. Stepdown from ICU, surgical patients, urology patients: Cystoscopy. Oncology patients would transfer if they have cardiac problems to be monitored. Rare ortho patients. Some correctional patients (federal not State), strokes, TBI, high acuity, heavy patients, a lot of patients with bedsores, about 1/3 from nursing homes, peg tubes, sepsis, etc...
