Primary Responsibilities
Job Overview:Aptive is seeking experienced Medical Supply Technicians to support the Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in Cheyenne, WY, and Loveland, CO. The technician will be responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, high-level disinfection, sterilization, and distribution of medical instruments and equipment to various surgical and clinical departments.
This role is crucial in maintaining sterile conditions and ensuring compliance with federal healthcare regulations, including those set forth by the VA, CDC, FDA, and Joint Commission.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive and inspect contaminated instruments from various medical units (Operating Room, Dental, Endoscopy, Ophthalmology, Podiatry, etc.).
- Determine the correct method of decontamination and cleaning according to manufacturer instructions and hospital procedures.
- Operate sterilization and decontamination equipment, including steam sterilizers, hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilizers (V-Pro), high-level disinfectors (Trophon, Medivators), and ultrasonic washers.
- Assemble and package medical and surgical instrument trays, ensuring proper sterilization methods are applied.
- Monitor and verify sterilization processes using chemical and biological indicators.
- Maintain sterile storage areas, organize inventory, and ensure first-in, first-out rotation of sterile supplies.
- Provide support for surgical case carts and ensure the correct instrument sets are available for scheduled procedures.
- Maintain compliance with infection control policies, HIPAA regulations, and VA healthcare standards.
- Participate in ongoing training sessions to stay up to date on sterile processing best practices.
- Handle and dispose of biohazard materials according to VA protocols.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Certifications:
- Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Preferred:
- Additional training in sterile processing through an accredited program
- Prior experience in a VA or hospital sterile processing department
Medical & Compliance Requirements:
- Annual Tuberculosis (TB) screening
- Proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Varicella, and Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (Tdap)
- Annual Influenza vaccination (or wear a mask if exempt)
- HIPAA & Privacy Act compliance training
- OSHA training in bloodborne pathogens and infection control
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Knowledge of:
- Surgical instruments and equipment
- Sterilization techniques and infection control protocols
- Medical and surgical terminology
- Microbiology principles related to sterilization
- Proper handling of flexible and rigid endoscopes
- Ability to:
- Work independently and manage workload effectively
- Follow precise instructions for sterilization and decontamination
- Troubleshoot sterilization equipment issues
- Communicate effectively with medical staff regarding equipment needs
