LVN Nurse - Jail

SUMMARY OF POSITION

Perform medical screening for intake and inmates, assess health care needs of inmates, dispense medication as prescribed and needed, schedule appointments for inmates with healthcare providers, perform medical tests within scope of license, maintain accurate medical charts and related paperwork, available to work on-call in response to medical emergencies at the jail.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP

• Reports to: Jail Administrator or Lieutenant.
• Directs: Med Aide/Med Assistant(s).
• Other: Has contact with other departmental employees, law enforcement agencies, external medical providers, inmates, and the general public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Allocate medication to inmates as prescribed and perform or oversee its adminstration;
• Assess inmates’ medical needs and arrange for treatment;
• Perform PPD skin tests on inmates and enter data into records per policy;
• Review, order, and prepare prescription refills for inmates;
• Perform TB testing on all inmates admitted to detention center and on officers as needed;
• Assist doctor or provider with examinations and medical rounds;
• Maintain medical security and safety procedures for inmates and employees including inventory of supplies and drugs;
• Administer pregnancy test to female inmates who may be pregnant;
• Measure vital signs, perform wound care, and draw labs;
• Perform administrative tasks: filing; scheduling appointments; maintaining contact with doctors’ offices, United States Marshall Service, other detention facilities, and primary care physicians;
• Provide health assessments and counseling to inmates;
• Monitor blood sugar and blood pressure levels on inmates with chronic conditions;
• Available for on-call and shift-work that include holidays, weekends, and evenings;
• Request special diets for inmates as needed
• Maintain cleanliness and good organization in work area and with record management;
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Must have graduated from an accredited Vocational or Practical Nurse Program and successfully passed the NCLEX.
• Must possess high school diploma or its equivalent (GED).
• Must pass medical and UA screening furnished by the County.
• Must pass criminal history background check.
• Current certification in First Aid and CPR skills.
• Knowledge and ability to handle adverse drug reactions to medicine.
• Must pass oral interview exam.
• Possess valid Texas driver’s license and be a US citizen.
• Must present honorable discharge form if prior military service.
• Must obtain Basic jailer license within twelve months of hire.
• Must be able to follow all medical directions as prescribed by healthcare providers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, bend, kneel, walk, stand, reach, and move objects weighing up to 20 lbs. The noise level in the work environment is usually high. The employee will be required to perform multiple tasks correctly and efficiently, work within deadlines, and respond to emergency situations.
