Primary and Junior Design Teacher (K-3)
Arbor School of Arts and Sciences, a nonprofit, independent, K-8 school situated on a wooded 21-acre campus 20 minutes south of downtown Portland, Oregon, is seeking a part-time (.6 – .8 FTE) Design Teacher to join us in the 2025-2026 school year.
The Design Teacher works with Primary (K-1st grade) and Junior (2nd-3rd grade) students in mixed-age classes. Using a variety of art media, and with a careful balance of two- and three-dimensional projects, the Design Teacher introduces age-appropriate visual art techniques and skills while integrating with the school’s thematic curriculum. The Design Teacher also welcomes volunteers to assist in the Design Studio on a weekly basis. In addition to design instruction, the Design Teacher will have the opportunity to work with students in small groups and assist in other classrooms.
The ideal candidate will be a creative, flexible, and reliable individual who is drawn to working closely with curious students and colleagues within a small school community dedicated to developing intellect, character, and creativity. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a readiness to partner in working toward cultural competency and toward being a truly equitable and inclusive community.
Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:
- A strong background in two- and three-dimensional visual arts.
- Experience teaching elementary school aged children.
- Experience with and enthusiasm for integrating visual arts with other disciplines.
- The ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues, including strong written communication skills.
- A commitment to centering equity and inclusion in the classroom and in the curriculum.
- Graduate degree in elementary and/or arts education is preferred, but not required.
This position is part time (.6 to .8 FTE to be determined by the school and successful candidate) and comes with competitive salary and benefits, including 100% employer-paid group medical insurance. The base salary range at 1 FTE is $57,000 - $94,000 (this position will be .6 - .8 FTE, to be determined upon hire). Salary is commensurate with experience.
