Job Description:
The Trimmer Start (Trimmer 1) (Non-Union) position is integral to our tree maintenance and line clearance team. This role involves performing ground operations, supporting climbers and bucket operators, and developing climbing and safety skills with an emphasis on utility line clearance. Employees in this position are expected to have foundational experience in tree climbing and demonstrate knowledge of basic climbing techniques and equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform general labor tasks for a full workday.
- Operate chainsaws, chippers, and other tree maintenance equipment.
- Assist climbers and bucket operators from the ground.
- Conduct routine vehicle and equipment inspections and maintenance.
- Set ropes with a throw line and tie knots and hitches required for climbing and rigging tasks.
- Inspect climbing equipment (ropes, saddle, flip line, hardware) for safety and function.
- Demonstrate proficiency in tying and using approved friction hitches for climbing and descending.
- Conduct pre-climb tree inspections and ascend trees using approved methods under supervision.
- Work safely around utility lines, adhering to safety standards and protocols.
- Participate in ongoing training and progress in the Line Clearance Qualification Program (LCQP) booklet, including Trimmer Trainee and Bucket Operator sections.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Foundational tree climbing experience and familiarity in utility line clearance required.
- Skills: Proficiency in Groundperson tasks and ability to perform climbing-related responsibilities safely and effectively.

Training Requirements:
- Completed and signed Groundperson Training.
- Completed annual Aerial Rescue Training.
- LCQP test completed.
- CPR and First Aid certification (within 90 days of hire).
- Completed Introduction to Climbing Training and Tree Feller Training.
- Valid Driver’s License preferred.
Travel Requirements:
- Expected travel up to 80%, with the potential for travel to remote locations.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor duties in various weather conditions and on uneven surfaces.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a field environment with some shift work as needed.
