General Job Duties: The primary role of the nurse is to adhere to the requirements set forth by the Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) and the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) for the Medication Assistance Certification (MAC) training program to ensure the safe and accurate administration of medications and the proper delegation of nursing tasks to unlicensed staff.
Qualifications: Unencumbered RN licensed by the Alabama Board of Nursing, Completion of the ABN-approved training to become an MAS Nurse in ADMH Community Programs, CPR certification, and CPI training.
Essential Functions:
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervision of MAC workers
Medical Responsibilities:
- Reviewing, updating, and maintaining medical records
- Completing and processing medical documentation
- Collaborating with other healthcare professionals and pharmacies to ensure that all orders are carried out as prescribed
- Communicating with team members, staff, and natural supports regarding the healthcare of the people served
- Reconciling person-served medications monthly and as needed
- Completing new admission paperwork
- Performing hospital follow-up
- Conducting hospital discharges
- Reviewing Therap Health Tracking
- Conducting medication audits
- Training MAC workers to perform assigned duties
- Nurse is to be available for periodic inspection and evaluation through physical presence and electronic or telephonic communication for direction, consultation, and collaboration at all times
- Administer medications per prescriptions, standing orders, or verbal orders received from a physician as needed
- Attend in-service education programs, staff meetings, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to maintain compliance with ADMH, ABN, or Arc policy
Other MAS Nurse Responsibilities:
- Complete Annual Nursing Assessments/Self-Medication Assessments/Choking Risk/AIMS/Fall Assessments
- Complete Focal Assessments
- Complete Comprehensive Assessments
- Administer injectable medications
- Perform sterile procedures
- Monitor and assess wounds and perform dressing changes
- Remove staples and sutures
- Monitor medication administration
- Develop, implement, and follow through on plans of care for people in services
- Supervise and assess MAC workers as they perform assigned duties, ensuring adherence to protocols
- Conduct MAC Training sessions
- Miscellaneous All other duties assigned
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software and Hardware:
- Phone, computer, office equipment
- Medical equipment including blood pressure cuffs, thermometers, syringes, needles, and stethoscopes
- Electronic Health Records (EHR) software, Therap Health Tracking, and pharmacy systems
- Medication administration tools and medical supplies for assessments and treatments
Protective Equipment Required:
- Some duties may require protective gloves, masks, scrubs, lab coats, or other protective medical attire
- May be required to wear additional protective gear when administering medication or performing wound care
