Job Description

SUMMARY: Administers the health care component of the school under the supervision of the school principal, by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

·        Gathering appropriate information from health agencies and professionals.

·        Communicating with physicians and other professionals regarding the health status of students.

·        Evaluating and assessing problems, goals and medical plans and participating on the interdisciplinary team to maximize integration of indicated health services into the total program.

·        Establishing objectives and recommending specific techniques for students requiring health services, and taking responsibility for follow-up programs.

·        Initiating, facilitating, and maintaining a liaison between the school community health agencies.

·        Maintain appropriate medical records.

·        Educating and assisting student’s family in providing follow-up health care.

·        Coordinating the health referral process and communicating health findings to appropriate persons and/or agencies.

·        Recommending, maintaining and ordering medical material and equipment.

·        Providing health training for staff and family members in conjunction with other team members.

·        Attending team meetings and conferring with staff and related services consultants.

·        Developing familiarity with and following all policies, procedures and standards set forth by:

ARC of Essex County, Inc. and Stepping Stones school.

New Jersey Department of Education.

New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

Performing additional duties as directed by the Principal.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

RN with School Nurse certification New Jersey License.  Experience with students who have developmental delays.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups and students, parents or employees of the organization.

MATHMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units or measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

NJ School Nurse, Registered Nurse

Qualifications
