Job Summary:
As a Direct Support Professional (DSP) - Caregiver, you will provide essential care and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a residential group home setting. You will be responsible for ensuring the physical, emotional, and social well-being of residents while maintaining a safe, comfortable, and homely environment. This role requires compassion, patience, and a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for individuals under your care.
Key Responsibilities:
Personal Care:
- Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
- Assist in administering medications as prescribed by healthcare professionals and document accordingly.
- Monitor and assist with mobility, transfers, and exercises as needed.
- Support residents with adaptive equipment and assistive technologies, as well as specific behavioral and sensory needs.
Meal Preparation and Nutrition:
- Prepare nutritious meals and snacks in accordance with dietary restrictions and preferences.
- Ensure residents receive appropriate hydration and monitor their dietary intake.
- Accommodate special diets, food allergies, and feeding techniques specific to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (e.g., texture modifications, specialized equipment).
Healthcare Support:
- Monitor and report changes in residents' physical or emotional conditions to the manager and healthcare providers.
- Escort residents to medical appointments and coordinate healthcare services as necessary.
- Maintain accurate records of residents' health-related information.
- Manage health monitoring specific to intellectual and developmental disabilities, such as seizures, communication limitations, and behavioral health needs.
Social and Emotional Support:
- Foster a supportive and caring environment by engaging residents in meaningful conversations and activities.
- Provide emotional support and companionship to reduce feelings of isolation.
- Implement individualized support plans and encourage participation in social and recreational activities within the home or the community.
Housekeeping and Maintenance:
- Ensure a clean, organized, and safe living environment for residents.
- Perform light housekeeping duties, including laundry and maintaining communal areas.
- Conduct routine safety checks and report any maintenance issues promptly.
Documentation and Record-Keeping:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of resident care, including medication logs, incident reports, and daily care charts.
- Complete required documentation for state regulatory compliance.
Communication:
- Communicate effectively with residents, their families, and other healthcare professionals.
- Attend team meetings and participate in care planning discussions.
Safety and Emergency Response:
- Be prepared to respond to emergencies and ensure the safety and security of residents.
- Follow established safety protocols and evacuation procedures.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; certification in caregiving, nursing assistant, or related field preferred.
- Prior experience in caregiving for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is highly preferred.
- Workday competency training completion and OIS certification highly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Compassion, patience, and empathy.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Physical stamina and the ability to assist with lifting and transferring residents.
- Understanding of and commitment to confidentiality and privacy regulations.
- Willingness and flexibility to work different shifts
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Acceptable driving record and a valid driver's license are highly preferred
