ArcelorMittal Global R&D East Chicago Center is seeking a highly skilled and motivated engineer to be part of the ArcelorMittal Electrical Steel development team. In this position, the Engineer will work with Global R&D and plant teams on the start-up of a new electrical steel processing line and the development of processing practices for new non-oriented electrical steel products. Professional skills are needed to solve complex quality issues and address product defects by understanding customer requirements, product characteristics, and process capabilities. Deep understanding of electromagnetism, electromagnetic materials, and manufacturing of such alloys is needed to be successful in this role. This position will report to Global R&D – East Chicago but will be based out of our plant in Calvert, Alabama.
Job Description:
The ideal candidate will possess a strong engineering background and be well-versed in the processing and quality of non-oriented electrical steels. Superior communication and interpersonal skills are required as is the ability to work cross-functionally with other areas of the organization including Operations, Quality, Commercial, and Global R&D. Excellent knowledge and application of advanced data analysis techniques including AI is necessary. Close collaboration on electrical steels processing with ArcelorMittal’s sister research laboratories is required The candidate will report to the East Chicago Center of ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D but will be located at our plant in Calvert, AL. Travel both domestic and international up to 10% of the time is also a requirement.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Global R&D and plant teams to develop practices for successful production of non-oriented electrical steel grades.
- Perform root cause analysis of product quality problems and provide diagnosis to solve manufacturability issues.
- Deploy R&D developed solutions in the area of electrical steel manufacturing with Global R&D teams.
- Train plant staff on operating practices for electrical steel manufacturing, develop quality control documents, and communication kits with customers.
- Use plant data to generate new scientific knowledge and support research and development of new products and technologies.
- Create, plan, and execute R&D projects observing timelines, budgets, and company safety rules.
Experience Requirements:
Minimum/Basic Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field
• Good understanding of electromagnetism and electromagnetic theory
• Strong data analysis capabilities using machine learning and other artificial intelligence techniques.
• Proven problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Requirements:
• MS Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineering • Proven record of successfully managing and improving electrical steel production processes.
• Familiarity with instruments for testing and quality management of electrical steels
• Excellent knowledge of electromagnetic theory and modeling
• Proficient in planning and managing projects.
