JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary / objective

Reporting to the Director of Mission Advancement, the Associate Director of Development and Stewardship (ADDS) is responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, closing, and providing stewardship to individuals capable of making gifts ($25,000 ) to further the mission of the Archdiocese of Detroit and Sacred Heart Major Seminary, with a focus on the Department of Catholic Schools. The ADDS will act as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of donors and will work in partnership with department staff to move the fundraising relationship forward. The ADDS works collaboratively with and in support of volunteers, other development staff, and leaders to cultivate and solicit donors for institution-wide priorities.

Essential functions

  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward an assigned portfolio of 120-150 donor and volunteer prospects.
  • Achieve annual goals for engagement activity, volunteer commitments, stewardship, and fundraising.
  • Regularly evaluate prospect portfolio, build relationships with donors, and solicit gifts culminating in donations in the five-figure range, or higher.
  • Actively research prospect lists and maintain awareness of donors' / prospects' personal and professional realities, with a focus on growing relationships and building strategies to move donors from annual to major gifts.
  • Effectively and creatively steward donors, regularly sharing the stories of impact.
  • In partnership with the Department of Catholic Schools, formulate and plan annual appeals and fundraising initiatives, including donor and communication strategies, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Collaborate the Department of Catholic Schools to create cultivation and solicitation strategies to meet department fundraising goals, while matching the interests and objectives of prospects.
  • Prepare timely written contact reports, proposals, gift illustrations, informational materials, and other materials to advance the cultivation and solicitation process.
  • Encourage donors' ongoing support of the SHMS Annual Fund and Catholic Services Appeal.
  • Attend Advancement, AOD, and SHMS events to build and maintain relationships with donors, prospects and other possible philanthropic stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage implementation of donor and prospect research processes.
  • Other duties based on the needs of the Development Office may be assigned.

Physical demands

Position requires the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. May involve some lifting, carrying, pushing / or pulling of objects and materials (5-50 pounds). May involve extended periods of time standing or sitting at a keyboard or workstation. May involve repetitive motion (i.e., typing). May involve walking long distances. May require long periods of time speaking.

Travel required : Donor meetings and parish or school visits primarily within Southeast Michigan.

Required education and experience

  • Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in a related field and 3 years in fundraising, with proven success in closing five-figure gifts (and higher).
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors to develop relationships between them and the institution.
  • Demonstrated leadership and the ability to successfully manage multi-functional or diverse areas.
  • Successful experience in making cold calls, as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Proven success in working in a hybrid environment (on-site plus telecommuting)

  • Refined analytical skills, with a focus on attention to detail.
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality handling highly sensitive material, such as protected PII (Personally Identifiable Information) and financial information.
