Reports To: Department Head of Pastoral Ministries

FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-Time

Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, evenings and weekends as needed


Summary: The Director for Worship is the subject matter specialist of the Church’s theology and praxis of the liturgical life of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The Director provides leadership, vision and content which will serve as the foundation for the outreach to parishes in order to foster and promote Christian prayer and the liturgical norms of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese as well as ongoing liturgical renewal. The staff in the Department for Pastoral Ministries and this Director serve in a model of “pastoral de conjunto” and all of this is practiced through synodality and co-responsibility at the core.


The fundamental basis of this role is an integration of the New Evangelization and Missionary Discipleship in a pastoral de conjunto to serve the multicultural pastoral needs of children, youth, young adults, adults (as couples, and men and women as individuals) and seniors.

Requirements

Position Responsibilities:

  • Stay up-to-date on communication from the Church Magisterium and different coordinating bodies of the college of bishops (USCCB, TCCB, etc.)
  • Be informed of any important gathering or activity internal or external to the Catholic Church in National, Regional & Local matters pertaining to the role
  • *Review resources and recommend national and/or regional best practices for parish programs that support prayer and liturgical life.
  • *Develop and implement best practices in specialized area.
  • *Develop and maintain budget for specialized area.
  • *Discover and create innovative initiatives and trends for the New Evangelization involving the entire age spectrum (children, youth, young adults, families and seniors) especially with regards to the promotion of prayer and worship, in particular the Eucharist.
  • *Develop a strategy for the faithful of the archdiocese that will lead to a full, conscious, active participation in the liturgical life of the Church.
  • *Provide vision, expertise based on the Church’s mission and ministry in prayer and liturgy for all ages and groups.
  • Envision and articulate a comprehensive and innovative content for this ministry in the Archdiocese, based on the priorities of the Archdiocese and the teachings of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
  • *Create archdiocesan policies / norms pertaining to this area of expertise valid throughout the Archdiocese, particularly pertaining to the celebration of the sacraments.
  • *Collaborate with the Institute for Lay Ecclesial Ministry & Service to form liturgical ministers.
  • Develop practical formation and process for installation of lectors & acolytes.
  • *Offer specific content in formation in support of the Archdiocese of San Antonio and the USCCB campaigns and priorities pertaining to prayer and liturgy.
  • Maintain a cross-integrated approach to prayer and liturgy with relevant content from each of the special ministry areas (Marriage & Family Life; Life Justice, Peace; Evangelization & Faith Formation; Youth & Young Adult).
  • Collaborate with the Director of Faith Formation regarding Christian Initiation to cohesively form parish leadership.
  • Promote in a special way all reverence and respect while planning Archdiocesan liturgies.
  • Management and development of Archdiocesan choir that reflects diverse style and groups.
  • Create Commissions / Advisory Boards, when necessary in order to create, promote and review any matter or initiative pertaining to prayer and liturgy for the good of the Archdiocese.
  • *Serve as a liaison on behalf of the Archdiocese and provide advice to liturgical organizations.
  • *Serve as the lead director for events connected to ministry in related area.
  • *Support liturgical ministry leadership in parishes and schools (Lectors/Readers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers, ministers of art and environment, music ministers and choirs, ushers, greeters, and ministers of hospitality) providing for opportunities for formation and spiritual growth.
  • Work closely with the Department Head of the Office of Communications to ensure information is posted regularly, to keep informed of prayer and liturgy issues critical to the Church.
  • Adhering to safety training and protocols on a daily basis and taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of self, others.
  • Responsible for protecting the confidentiality of any information or material obtained in the service with the organization to include but not limited to client names and information, services rendered to clients, donors names and gifts, internal and external investigations or results of any investigations, and financial information.
  • Adherence to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy is mandatory.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Theology, Liturgy, Music, Sacred Music

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in Parish or diocesan Liturgy or Music Ministry.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in preparing liturgies including daily/weekly Eucharist, Ordinations, Sacramental celebrations, Rites of Christian Initiation, and doing formation of parish liturgical ministers.
  • Must be a Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church.

License and Credentials:

  • Reliable transportation
  • Valid driver license
  • Valid vehicle insurance

Minimum Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish preferred;
  • Extensive working knowledge of all major documents on the Liturgy since the Second Vatican Council, all liturgical ritual books, the CCC, the Ordo, current developments in the Church’s theology, spirituality, and liturgy.
  • Must be attentive to the needs of a culturally diverse Archdiocesan population, incorporating cultural sensitivity into all facets of the ministry;
  • Excellence in organizational management, setting and achieving goals and objectives, and managing a budget.
  • Strong public relations skills with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders that include parishes, groups, other churches, as well as within and beyond the Pastoral Ministry Center.
  • Well balanced combination of recognizing process and procedure and creating and communicating new initiatives.
  • Experience with computer software and thorough proficiency of Microsoft Office Suite. Other publishing programs preferred.
  • A solid grasp of the principles of good liturgical celebrations and formation of liturgical ministers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; a passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills including professional tact and courtesy, and ability to express ideas clearly, creatively, and logically, both orally and in writing.
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven and self-directed.
  • Keen sense of missionary spirit and missionary zeal.
  • Must be detail oriented, organized, self-motivated, work well independently and on a team.
  • Must have good critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Travel Requirements: Travel requirements for the position includes up to 50% local and up to 5% overnight.
