This position coordinates the county's emergency response to wildland fires, search and rescue and other county-level incidents. May serve as the Sheriff's liaison during incidents. It provides for protection of life, health, safety, welfare, and property of the public and community; as well as assists community members in solving problems related to emergency management.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Exercises direct and indirect supervision of assigned personnel, operations, and activities to include coordinating training, assigning and reviewing work, participating in the selection process, making recommendations impacting pay status, and disciplinary action, and evaluating performance. This position, when required, will be responsible for the supervision of temporary employees and Sheriff's volunteers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Respond as part of an initial attack squad and assist with the management of Wildland fires.
- Assist in the coordination and supervision of the Archuleta Sheriff's Wildland Fire Crew.
- Maintain discipline and enforces department rules and regulations with the crew and volunteers.
- Manage Wildland fires in areas of the Archuleta County Response Zone that are unincorporated and outside the fire districts and outside the national forest, and as requested elsewhere.
- Participate in hazard assessment and fuel reduction work.
- Coordinate the Archuleta County Multi-agency Coordination Group (MAC Group), as requested.
- Coordinate and support division volunteers.
- Coordinate with and support the Archuleta County Incident Management Group (IMG), the search and rescue (SAR) teams and cooperating agencies to manage county incidents.
- Coordinate with Local, Regional, State, and Federal partners, as requested. This may include, but is not limited to other governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, private businesses and individuals and specialty groups.
- When required, serves as the Archuleta County Sheriff liaison during incidents.
- Participate in local search and rescue operations, and to help manage local emergencies and disasters.
- When required, will be expected to hike into very remote areas, with a loaded pack, and operate in all kinds of weather conditions, for what could be multiple days.
- May assist in resolving minor disciplinary and personnel problems of assigned personnel.
- Inspect and maintain equipment.
- Conduct inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Prepare incident reports and daily activity records.
- Assist in the development/revision of county emergency plans.
- Participate on various committees and boards related to assigned activities and responsibilities.
- Attend community meetings and provide education as requested.
- Write, review and edit grant proposals, memorandums of understanding, and standard operating guidelines.
- Facilitate local training: incident management, emergency management, wildland fire, search and rescue and emergency medical care.
- Under the direction of the Director and/or the Sheriff, communicate with the Board of County commissioners, other Elected Officials, and the public on events or emergencies; work with the Sheriff's Office and County Public Information Officers to prepare news releases; responds to media interviews and questions and other official communication(s)
- Will be required to act, 24 hours a day, including holidays and weekends
- Represent the Sheriff and the Sheriff's Office at all times during employment
- Travel to regional, state and national trainings and conferences to receive training or support the event.
- Provide medical aid to injured subjects.
- The incumbent must ensure self and assigned personnel are in adherence to established policies, procedures, and standards.
- This position will be responsible for gathering information relating to fuel types, weather conditions, and fire behavior. This position is expected to respond on all wildland fires and smoke reports dispatched to the Sheriff's Office.

Salary : $53,150 - $74,422
