ARCOSA Specialty Materials is searching for an Industrial Engineering Intern for our Baton Rouge, LA facility. As an Industrial Engineering Intern, you will help design, implement, and optimize processes, systems, services, or scientific applications using broad engineering concepts and research techniques. Additionally, you will experience other areas of the manufacturing process; including safety practices and environmental stewardship, product development, thermal processing, maintenance systems, and quality control.
Arcosa Specialty Material is a leading producer and distributor of industrial minerals, including expanded shale and clay, gypsum, limestone, and other miscellaneous minerals. Arcosa Specialty Materials operates manufacturing facilities across the U.S. The Baton Rouge, LA facility is a gypsum plaster plant with an annual production capacity of 185,000 tons of industrial and flooring plaster products. Plant processes include gypsum crushing/screening, alpha and beta plaster calcining, product fine grinding and screening, mechanical and pneumatic material transport systems, dust collection systems, bulk material mixing and packaging systems, and bulk material loadout systems.

What You Will Do
- Be an active participant in plant safety processes including Arcosa’s safety culture initiative, ARC100.
- Participate in plant safety initiatives, committees and activities.
- Conduct mandatory MSHA pre-shit inspections on equipment and work areas as required.
- Develop understanding of MSHA standards and industry/corporate policies and procedures.
- Travel to operating ASM facilities across the nation to develop project work, expecting ~ 50% travel away from home.
- Develop understanding of applicable safety standards, including but not limited to ASTM, ACI and other corporate quality control guidelines.
- Assist in development and implementation of training program.
- Assist in the development of standard operating procedures using sound Industrial Engineering practices and fundamentals.
- Working with plant operations, maintain detailed records and prepare detailed reports and studies for use in suggestion process improvements.
- Document, digitize and build a comprehensive system to ensure quality of training, SOP review and system sustainability for use by plant management.
- Support daily manufacturing requirements, including optimizing existing systems and practices while seeking new methodologies and technologies to spurn operational gains, while maintaining product quality and environmental compliance.
- Develop and sell plant improvement projects for approval in safety, operations, quality, or environmental.
- Assess production scheduling in a high production, quick paced environment and make suggestions to improve.
- Ensure that internal processes and instructions meet customer demand and requirements.
- Position will be a combination of hands-on involvement with various plant positions and administrative.
- Work with Quality, Continuous Improvement and Maintenance to solve problems benefited by sound Industrial Engineering practices.
- Assist manufacturing team in daily production support activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must be actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from a four-year college or university.
- Must be sophomore status or higher.
- Strong computer and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently in a manufacturing environment while adhering to good safety practices.
- Ability to decipher and analyze data for operational improvements.
- Ability to map out processes and identify bottlenecks.
- Skills in organizing tasks, timelines, and resources MS Office Suite: Proficiency in MS Excel for data analysis, MS PowerPoint for presentations, and MS Word for documentation
- Capability to identify issues and find effective solutions
- Ability to collaborate with different departments and teams
- Flexibility to adjust in a dynamic work environment
- Taking the initiative to learn, ask questions, and seek feedback
- Efficiently managing tasks and responsibilities within provided timelines
- Basic knowledge of tools like Power BI to present data findings
- Willing to travel on the job ~ 50% away from home, Monday – Friday.
- Must be open to and comfortable with change.
- The ability to stand, stoop, bend, lift up to 100 lbs, walk, climb stairs, ladders and catwalks up to 60 feet as required
- The ability to work in varied outdoor environments (cold, hot, dry, dusty, rainy, snowy, icy)
