Summary
Responsible for a variety of sonographic operations to include equipment operation, staffing, examination protocols, and patient safety protocols.
Functions as the primary contact for providers, staff, patients and radiologists for sonographic examinations.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintains the quality control program for ultrasound department to include ultrasound program in the village health clinics
- Perform all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician.
- Maintains the high-level disinfection process according to department policy.
- Provides direct training and competencies for high-level disinfection equipment in the department and village health clinics.
- Works with manager and assists with updating ultrasound policies and procedures.
- Assist with preventive maintenance on ultrasound equipment and troubleshoot malfunctions.
- Maintains and tracks ultrasound supplies within the department and village health clinics
- Takes call according to call schedule after the close of regular department and village health clinics scheduled hours.
- Responsible for daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures and quality controls within the department and village health clinics
- Organizes the daily work schedule within the department and village health clinics and perform related clerical duties as required.
- Coordinate work schedule with departmental manager and/or scheduling desk to assure workload coverage.
- Complete all work before clocking out and leaving. This includes attending meetings with department manager and supervisor.
- Report equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor, manager and equipment vendor.
- Maintains ultrasound equipment cleaning schedule to ensure regulatory readiness.
- Performs sonographic skills check off to onboarding sonographers.
- Identify and retire old procedures as appropriate, and ensure updated policies are communicated.
- Use independent judgement during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
- Expedites critical findings and communicates incidental findings as appropriate.
- Prepare preliminary reports and contact referring physicians when required.
- Analyze sonograms and medical history and communicate findings to the appropriate physician.
- Coordinate with other staff to assure appropriate patient care is provided.
- Address problems of patient care as they arise and make decisions to appropriately resolve the problems.
- Assume responsibility for the safety, mental, and physical well-being of patients while they are in the sonographer’s care.
- Participate in training and education as appropriate.
- Establish and maintain ethical working relationships and good rapport with all interrelating hospitals, referral or commercial agencies.
- Assist in other radiology modalities as needed.
Education & Experience
- Graduated from a Formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
- Associates of Applied Science degree in Diagnostics Medical Sonography or equivalent hospital training.
- Two years of experience under a Board-Certified Radiologist.

- Ability to evaluate sonograms in order to acquire appropriate diagnostic information.
- Ability to integrate diagnostic sonograms, laboratory results, patient history and medical records, and adapt sonographic examination as necessary.
- Ability to use independent judgment to acquire the optimum diagnostic sonographic information in each examination performed.
- Ability to evaluate, synthesize and communicate diagnostic information to the attending physician.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the patient and the health care team, recognizing the special nature of sonographic examinations and patient’s needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and health care team.
- Ability to follow established departmental procedures.
- Knowledge of quality control, preventative maintenance and quality assurance requirements.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment.
- Ability to work with physicians and other professional staff in a collaborative manner.
- Ensure patient confidentiality at all times.

Computer Skills
Ability to utilize various computer programs to include Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, RPMS/HER and PACS required
Certification/Licensure
- Registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in a specialty area.
- Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty or specialties as appropriate.
- Current BLS certification.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Responsible for supervising, onboarding, and training of TDY sonographers.
