Maintenance Technician - Temporary

Under the general direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the primary function of this position is to maintain building facilities by performing services including painting, carpentry, plumbing, carpeting and electrical repairs and installations. Facility maintenance also includes: (1) checking the boiler room at ASRC and other buildings; (2) performing routing checks for work order requests at the shop; and (3) responding, as needed, to non-routine or emergency calls.

The scope of the position includes: (1) exchanging information with all employees regarding maintenance and repair issues; (2) requesting bids and communication on performance with contractors; (3) ordering supplies from suppliers; and (4) discussion of compliance with federal and state agencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  • Perform daily check of boiler room at ASRC and Courthouse Building.
  • Perform routine check at the shop for work order requests.
  • Respond to work order requests by performing required services.
  • Performs maintenance services at the courthouse building, ASRC building, Top of the World Hotel, Eskimos, Inc. gas station, NAPA store, and Igloo building.
  • Respond to random or emergency calls, such as, fire alarm activity, boiler and heat system failure, elevator problems, plugged sewer lines and frozen pipes.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Strong knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to the Inupiat culture
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three years’ experience in two or more of the following fields: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, drywall, painting and power tool operation
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s License preferred
  • The ability to speak and understand the Inupiaq language is important and preferred

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively and present information before groups of employees or customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; reach with hands and arms; and to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, frequently walk, climb, balance, and occasionally taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes the ability to use close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is in a busy office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions, frequently exposed to extreme cold, occasionally exposed to extreme heat, and may be required to travel in small and large commercial aircraft.
