Engineer III

Duties:

Performs detailed phases of design engineering work for highway projects of moderate size and complexity. Will independently perform aspects of design engineering tasks, which will include planning and conducting tasks requiring evaluation, selection, and adaptation and modification of standard design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Design and develop roadway and highway construction contract plans using the latest CADD software, including MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer. Identify construction pay items and compute quantities and opinions of costs. Prepare construction specifications and specification packages. Using state FDOT manuals, Develop and analyze feasible design alternatives comparing parameters, such as typical sections, horizontal and vertical alignments, right-of-way requirements, impacts on existing utilities, constructability, and construction cost. Perform standard computations and analysis and research assignments. Attend design meetings and coordinate with team members. Prepare letters, memorandums, reports, spreadsheets, power point presentations, and project schedules. Determines client requirements and develops specifications, drawings, instructions, and related documents. Consults with construction personnel concerning design constructability as related to field conditions, sequencing, and scheduling of construction activities. Ensures that production of drawings, specifications, reports, and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements. May plan, schedule, and coordinate the work of lower-level engineers who assist with particular projects.

Requirements: 

• Requires a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or closely related field from an ABET accredited program and 4 years of related experience.
• Related experience must be in roads, highways, or traffic engineering.
• Must have experience in utilizing various computer software packages and automated engineering and design equipment, including CADD software, MicroStation or OpenRoads Designer, GuideSign, and AutoTurn.
• Must have experience in utilizing state manuals in design, including FDOT Design Manual, FDOT Standard Plans for Road and Bridge Construction, FDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, FDOT Flexible Pavement Design Manual, Florida Greenbook, FDOT Traffic Engineering Manual, FDOT Rigid Pavement Design Manual.
