A position in theory and computational modelling in the Non-Equilibrium Soft and Active Matter group in the Materials Science Division is now open.

We encourage applicants working in soft, polymeric, and energy application related materials. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • data-driven materials discovery;
  • high-throughput virtual screening;
  • multiscale and coarse-grained molecular modeling;
  • enhanced sampling methods; structural and functional materials design;
  • statistical physics of materials;
  • computational property prediction;
  • bioinspired and biomimetic materials;
  • non-equilibrium and fluctuating systems;
  • self-organizing materials;
  • glassy materials;
  • block copolymers;
  • active and driven matter;
  • ion and electron transport;
  • x-ray probes of soft matter structure or dynamic properties;
  • mathematical and algorithmic underpinnings of machine intelligence;
  • explainable artificial intelligence (XAI);
  • physics-aware artificial intelligence (PAI);
  • and algorithms and techniques for materials discovery and automated laboratories.

Responsibilities

The candidate will manage several ongoing and new projects within the group’s portfolio and will work to develop and bring in new advanced project ideas. The candidate will be expected to closely partner with experimental researchers in the group and work to promote and advance the group’s combined experimental and computational approach to fundamental materials research. The candidate will be expected to lead proposal and reporting writing tasks, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and have the outlook and ability to create partnerships with other research groups and organizations. This position requires an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois.

Position Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in working within and leading teams undertaking a combined experimental and computational approach to fundamental materials research
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following polymer and soft matter materials systems: polyelectrolytes, coacervates, conjugated polymers, liquid crystals.
  • Skill in oral and written communication of scientific results and experimental plans
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Flexibility and fast adaptation to new situation
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork. Preferred
  • Ph.D. plus postdoctoral experience preferred with a focus on Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or Physics

RD2: Bachelors and 5 years’ experience, Masters and 3 years’ experience, PhD and 0 years’ experience, or equivalent.

The expected hiring range for this position is $90,063.00 - $143,010.27.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
