The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct innovative research focused on the synthesis, recycling, and performance characterization and degradation characterization of electrode materials for high energy density lithium-ion battery systems. This research will explore fundamental aspects of material synthesis, recycling, degradation mechanisms, and electrochemical performance, utilizing a variety of synthesis techniques and advanced structural and electrochemical characterization methods.
The appointee will work closely with researchers in the Electrochemical Energy Storage Department and partners, as well as collaborators at both on-site and off-site facilities, to design and perform experiments that advance understanding in the field.

The expected hiring range for this position is $70,758.00-$117,925.00.

Responsibilities:
- Under the guidance of a supervisor, synthesize and characterize lithium-ion electrode materials and related systems
- Conduct electrochemical analyses to evaluate performance and degradation behavior
- Investigate degradation mechanisms and direct recycling processes of lithium-ion cathode materials
- Analyze surface and bulk structural properties using spectroscopy, microscopy, and other advanced techniques
- Plan and execute research on battery materials using structural, chemical, mechanical, and electrochemical methods
- Maintain adherence to all Laboratory and Divisional Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality Assurance standards and policies
- Process and interpret experimental data; prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications
- Present research findings at scientific conferences and internal/external meetings; contribute to reporting for sponsors and stakeholders
- Maintain laboratory equipment and research facilities
- Provide technical support to group members and other ANL staff; seek technical guidance when needed

Position Requirements
- Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years) in the field of Chemistry or a closely related discipline
- Demonstrated expertise in lithium-ion cathode material synthesis, electrochemical testing, and coin cell construction
- Experience with spectroscopic and microscopic techniques for structural analysis
- Solid understanding of lithium-ion battery operation, cathode materials, and degradation mechanisms
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
- Familiarity with chemical diagnostic techniques and the safe handling of air-sensitive materials
- Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation
- Experience in battery materials recycling is a plus
