Function as a member of the Laboratory’s deployed safety services team. Communicate and support line management with the implementation of health, safety and environmental requirements and programs within your assigned area(s). Work in partnership with line management, researchers, workers, and other safety professionals providing hands-on technical assistance and consultative support to deliver best-in-class solutions consistent with Argonne’s integrated safety management processes. Participate in hazard and risk mitigation analyses, share best practices, and serve as a local and field site ESH resource.

Provide expertise, leadership, coordination, and guidance to ensure compliance with Argonne environment, safety and health (ES&H) policies and initiatives, DOE orders, and OSHA regulations. Coordinate and develop solutions associated with concerns or deficiencies from safety reviews, internal/external assessments, audits, facility/equipment inspections, and hazard evaluations. Support the development of work planning and control documentation. Lead or participate in event investigations and management assessments.

Evaluate and analyze energy, technological, emergency management, and environmental systems from a multidisciplinary perspective in both laboratory and field work environments.

Position Requirements

  • Ability to implement corporate environment, safety, and health policies and procedures in research and operations environments and hazardous and non-hazardous field sites.
  • Experience with formal assessments, reviews, investigations and job hazard analyses.
  • Ability to provide superior customer service.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in project development and implementation of field techniques.
  • Skill in contributing effectively to a team effort.
  • Skill in effectively producing end results through self-motivated efforts.
  • Skill in interacting with a broad range of technical, managerial and administrative staff personnel both internally and with contractors.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety, contractor safety, OSHA 29CFR1910 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry, and OSHA 29CFR1926 Safety and Health Regulations for Construction.
  • Knowledge of oral presentation and written communication techniques.
  • Skill in coordinating programs. Skill in being responsive to program requirements.
  • Skill working in field environments to coordinate and facilitate ESH related requirements.
  • Skill in being technically creative.
  • Knowledge of related hazards and controls of subsurface investigation work and other field work for environmental sampling and research is desired.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of DOE Safety and Health Programs as defined by 10 CFR 851.
  • B.S. degree with 4 years work experience as an ESH professional with industrial safety program activities is preferred.
  • Certification as a Safety Professional (CSP), desirable.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT3 or PT4) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience. The requirements of the various levels are as follows:

  • PT3 Level: Bachelor’s and 4 years of experience or equivalent. The expected pay range for this level is $83,264 - $131,342.
  • PT4 Level: Bachelor’s and 6 years of experience or equivalent. The expected pay range for this level is $102,694 - $162,020.

The expected hiring range for this position is $83,264.00 - $131,343.03.
