We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Alcohol and Drug Counselor to join our team in Glen Burnie, Maryland. The ideal candidate will provide counseling and support to individuals struggling with substance use disorders, helping them to achieve and maintain sobriety. This role involves conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and providing individual and group therapy sessions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine the severity of substance use disorders and develop individualized treatment plans.
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions to clients, utilizing evidence-based therapeutic techniques.
- Educate clients and their families about substance use disorders, treatment options, and coping strategies.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to coordinate care and ensure a holistic approach to treatment.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records by state and federal regulations.
- Monitor client progress and adjust treatment plans as necessary to achieve desired outcomes.
- Facilitate support groups and educational workshops for clients and their families.
- Stay current with the latest research and best practices in substance use disorder treatment.
Scheduled Duties & Responsibilities:
- Client Assessments:
- Conduct initial and ongoing assessments to evaluate clients' substance use and mental health status.
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings.
- Counseling Sessions:
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions using evidence-based therapeutic techniques.
- Facilitate family counseling sessions to support clients' recovery.
- Treatment Planning:
- Collaborate with clients to set realistic and achievable treatment goals.
- Regularly review and update treatment plans to reflect clients' progress and changing needs.
- Education & Prevention:
- Educate clients and their families about substance use disorders, treatment options, and coping strategies.
- Conduct educational workshops and prevention programs in the community.
- Case Management:
- Coordinate care with other healthcare professionals, social services, and community resources.
- Assist clients with accessing additional services, such as housing, employment, and legal assistance.
- Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Document all counseling sessions, treatment plans, and progress notes.
- Crisis Intervention:
- Provide immediate support and intervention during crisis situations.
- Develop and implement crisis management plans for clients at risk.
- Professional Development:
- Stay current with the latest research and best practices in substance use disorder treatment.
- Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
- Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations, as well as organizational policies and procedures.
- Participate in regular audits and quality assurance activities.
- Support Groups:
- Facilitate support groups for clients and their families.
- Encourage peer support and mutual aid among clients.
- Individual and Group Counseling

Unscheduled Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist supervisor with work related requests.
- Collaborate with and serve as program POC for external treatment providers and outside agencies as needed.
- Responsible for following regulations of COMAR, JOINT COMMISSION, CARF, any other regulatory body, and company policies/ procedures related to service delivery and documentation and co-facilitating orientation of all new hires to these as well.
- Support the maintenance of a safe environment by participating in training and drills as requested.
- Maintain confidentiality of records relating to client’s treatment.
- Participate in external and internal audits/surveys (JOINT COMMISSION/CARF/CSA/OHCQ) as directed by the supervisor.
- Participates in quality assurance and performance improvement plans by completing periodic audits or other activities to ensure regulatory compliance and/or improve service delivery.
- Ensure medical director or clinical supervisor review and co-sign documents as required.
- Stay updated on current research and best practices in substance use disorder counseling.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to enhance counseling skills and knowledge.
Physical Demands:
- Sitting: Prolonged periods of sitting while conducting counseling sessions, assessments, and documentation.
- Standing/Walking: Occasional standing and walking during group sessions, workshops, and community outreach activities.
- Lifting: Light lifting of materials such as client files, educational materials, and office supplies (up to 20 pounds).
- Manual Dexterity: Frequent use of hands for typing, writing, and handling paperwork.
- Visual Acuity: Ability to read and interpret client records, treatment plans, and other written materials.
- Hearing: Ability to hear and understand spoken communication during counseling sessions and meetings.
- Speech: Clear and effective verbal communication with clients, families, and colleagues.
- Mobility: Ability to move between different locations within the office or community settings as needed.
Qualifications:
- State licensure or certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor in Maryland.
