DES is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as an Intern for the Division of Financial Operations, Financial Services Administration. This position prepares a variety of fiscal and operating reports, performs detailed fiscal and budget analysis, and serves as primary contact for the assigned program; provides assistance to Department and programmatic management staff, communicating with Federal and other grantors on financial matters pertaining to assigned programs, including budget, cash management, reconciliation, compliance with State and Federal regulations, Federal reports, forecasts, and monitoring for assigned programs; and provides financial expertise to the Governor's Office of Strategic Planning and Budgeting, the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, and the Legislature.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assists in developing the Department's budget request submittal, including developing and maintaining fiscal summary and resource information for assigned areas, including data such as caseload statistics, historical funding patterns, and fund sources.
  • Assists in the development of presentation materials to explain or justify the funding priorities contained in the budget request.
  • Assists in tracking proposed or pending Federal and State legislation, providing updates on the status of legislation, and coordinating Department responses for the Legislature and the Governor's Office on possible impacts of policy changes or funding modifications.

  • Governmental accounting and fiscal principles.
  • Principles and practices of administration with special reference to organization, fiscal management, and budgetary control.
  • Statistical analysis and theory.

  • Oral, written, and presentation communications.
  • Analysis and interpretation of financial data.
  • Computer and software utilization.

Ability To

  • Perform difficult analytic work.
  • Monitor appropriations, revenues, and expenditures.
  • Schedule and prioritize assignments.

Selective Preference(s)

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Equivalent to Senior year in college.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Candidate must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Public Policy, or Political Science from an accredited college or university, and must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job to conduct State business, then the following requirements apply: Driver's License Requirements. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver's license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver's license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
  • Successfully pass background and reference check; employment is contingent upon completion of the above-mentioned process and the Agency's ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.
  • All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Retirement

State employees are required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS), the State sponsored retirement contribution plan and the Long-Term Disability (LTD) program after a 27-week waiting period. The ASRS defined benefit plan provides for life-long income upon retirement. You will also have the option to participate in a voluntary deferred compensation program to take advantage of tax-deferred retirement investments.
